China’s softening demand becomes a reality
David Buckland
April 17, 2015
In Tuesday’s Video Insight I discussed the fact that Australia’s Terms of Trade had nearly doubled from its 55 year average of 67 to 118.5 Index Points by mid-2011. However, with the slowdown in the Chinese economy, I suggested Australia’s Terms of Trade, which had declined 26 per cent to 87.9 Index Points by late 2014, could get somewhat worse over the foreseeable future. Should interest rates be lower?
Tim Kelley
April 9, 2015
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) surprised the market this week by not lowering official interest rates. While the RBA statement did note that the Board would have a think about lowering rates in the period ahead, the market was pretty sure a cut was in the bag. As a result, a Tuesday morning rally in the equity market made a sudden about face when the news was released. Continue…

Dear Property Speculator…
Roger Montgomery
March 30, 2015
Concentrate. Money has a price. The price of money is the interest rate. Lower the price and demand increases. It’s the same with credit. The price of credit is the interest rate. Credit is money. Lower the price of credit and more people borrow. But there is a problem for central banks who like to use the price of money and credit as a tool for manipulating or fine tuning the economy. That problem is the bluntness of the tool. Continue…

Which Aussie stock will benefit from European QE?
Roger Montgomery
March 13, 2015
Our good friends at UBS recently released a report with an interesting insight into the general market impact of the European Central Bank’s Quantitative Easing (QE) program.
It’s easy, if not lazy, for Australian investors to simply think Europe, the European Central Bank (ECB) and Angela Merkel are all “over there”, and therefore not relevant to Australian investors, but that is not the case. Continue…

Do Property Prices Ever Fall?
Roger Montgomery
February 11, 2015
It was December 14, 2011. The Australian Resource Boom was in full swing and the Pilbara was ground zero. In Port Hedland the median house price had almost doubled in four years from $600,000 in 2007 to more than $1 million, according to Real Estate Institute of WA figures. In Wedge Street, you needed plenty of ‘wedge’ – $995,000 to be exact – to buy a brand new ‘off the plan’ two-bedroom unit in a multilevel apartment complex.

WARNING: Will Tony Abbott (and You) Survive This?
Roger Montgomery
February 10, 2015
In the media last week, we emphasized the prospects for a hard landing in Australia. Being tied, by commodities, to the slowing growth of China puts Australia in the path of a serious economy malaise. Since 2010 we have been warning investors about the declining iron ore prices, Australian dollar and employment prospects. Back then China’s growth was being advertised at 12 per cent – fuelled in no small part by the property glut that was under construction. Continue…

What you should be watching out for in 2015
Roger Montgomery
January 21, 2015
In this article, Roger comments on the top investment issues for 2015. Firstly, the historical tendency for markets to eventually fall as interest rate rise and the impact this can have on all stocks. Then the need to be prepared for the inevitable – albeit deferred – impact the Financial System Inquiry will have on banks as positives from credit growth are offset by inevitable increases in capital requirements. Finally, further declines in iron ore prices and increasing investment property loans may impact resource and consumer sentiment respectively. Read here.

How did retailers go over Christmas?
Russell Muldoon
January 16, 2015
Since we last published this chart back in November, our view on listed retailing stocks remains largely unchanged and based on anecdotal feedback to date, the wealth effect from rising share markets and property prices is still not translating into spending. We have seen three downgrades (Kathmandu, Flight Centre & Oroton) and based on our research, it’s entirely possible these will not be isolated cases. Continue…
