Brett Craig
July 9, 2024
The ScotPac SME Growth Index (1) has been a closely watched piece of annual research by the Aura Private Credit investment team, which tracks the adoption of non-bank lenders in the Australian small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) market. The 2024 report has recently been released which marks the 10th anniversary of the annual research. The last decade and particularly last 6 years have displayed a major shift in SMEs adoption of non-bank lenders as their preferred providers of debt capital. Continue…

The Aussie economy and society is bifurcating with the housing crisis
David Buckland
July 4, 2024
Australian governments at all levels are not known for thinking beyond the electoral cycle. Take the fact that Australia took on 540,000 immigrants last year, whilst births exceeded deaths by 110,000. Hence an additional 650,000 Australians, or 2.5 per cent of our population, at a time when our country is going through an unprecedented housing crisis. Continue…

David Buckland
July 2, 2024
The Magnificent Seven (Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Meta (NASDAQ:META), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), which rose by an average 111 per cent over calendar 2023, continued their strong upward trajectory, increasing a further 37 per cent, on average, over the six months to June 2024. This helped drag up the Nasdaq, which jumped 18.1 per cent and 28.5 per cent for the 6 and 12 months to June 2024, respectively. The S&P 500 also did very well, up 22.7 per cent for the year and up 14.5 per cent for the six months to June 2024. Continue…

Private Credit and the demographic tailwind
David Buckland
June 28, 2024
In this week’s video insight, I discuss the Baby Boomers looming retirement, and the importance of ensuring financial stability. With rising property costs and the need to replace lost income, finding reliable investments is essential. I highlight private credit as an option, offering the potential for returns with lower volatility. By diversifying investments, retirees can enhance their income, providing financial security throughout their retirement years. Additionally, I address how rising property prices impact young people, making it harder for them to afford homes. Continue…

Australian property update
Roger Montgomery
June 14, 2024
I recently wrote here about the economics of borrowing 100 per cent of the purchase price for a two-bedroom apartment, and the results weren’t compelling. Despite the annual losses incurred from carrying the property and the historical lack of sufficient capital gains to offset those losses enough to render the investment superior to an equivalent investment in private credit, most Australians will trip over themselves to own an investment property. Bragging rights at dinner parties and keeping up with the Joneses may have something to do with it. As they say, you can lead a horse to water… Continue…

ABC Nightlife – Navigating market trends and Gen Z’s influence
Roger Montgomery
June 13, 2024
In my latest ABC Nightlife interview, I had the pleasure of joining Dom Knight to delve into the current market landscape and address some of your pressing questions. We explored how Generation Z’s connection through social media have not only transformed their social interactions but also disrupted numerous industries. We examined demographic shifts and the significant financial influence Gen Z is having on companies’ share valuations, with recent examples such as Asics (TYO:7936) Onitsuka Tigers and Crocs (NASDAQ:CROX). The demographic boom investors must follow
Roger Montgomery
June 11, 2024
The combination of a growing cohort entering salaried employment for the first time, a very high proportion of that salary being disposable, and the first generation to be comfortably and familiarly globally connected through social media can have a stratospheric impact on the revenues of companies that drop a product that becomes a smash hit with Gen Z. Continue…

Are we about to see increased property market volatility?
Roger Montgomery
May 30, 2024
Australia is currently witnessing challenging dynamics in the property market, where the costs and complexities associated with owning investment properties often outweigh the potential returns. Are high interest rates, increasing taxes, and rising maintenance expenses making property investment less attractive?

How much better off are you in a private credit fund versus an investment property?
Roger Montgomery
May 24, 2024
I recently met with a dear friend who was celebrating the full repayment of his mortgage. Putting aside the fact most people might think that’s an unusual milestone to celebrate, he used the gathering to discuss what investments he could fund by borrowing against his house. From the frying pan into the fire. Continue…

How baby boomers won the genetic lottery
Roger Montgomery
May 22, 2024
Baby boomers won the genetic lottery in so many ways, not just because a whole chicken in 1973 was $1.09 (Figure 1).
Take Wayne, for example, born in Sydney in 1945 after World War II. As a teenager, he lands a job earning the national award wage of £13.80 per week. He changes his mind after a couple of years and decides to study engineering. University is free (no HECS), so he continued to work part-time while at university and became an engineer in 1965, earning the average wage of £1,145 per year. Continue…

House prices not getting cheaper anytime soon
Roger Montgomery
May 21, 2024
For almost a decade, I have described Australian residential property owners as a “protected species”; Whether we look at the banks, the banking system in its entirety, regulators, including the Australia Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), the government and even individual politicians – many of whom own multiple residential investment properties – nobody wants to see property prices fall. Continue…

I’m with Dick Smith on this one; Julie Inman Grant shows courage.
David Buckland
May 9, 2024
Both sides of politics and most businesses are obsessed with a “big Australia”. Dick Smith is one of the few on the opposing side of the narrative. And as the Minns NSW Government usurps local councils’ planning powers by announcing their support for residential property located within 400 metres of a train station to be turned into 8–storey apartment blocks and within 800 metres of a train station to be turned into 6–storey apartment blocks, infrastructure will inevitably be left behind, and many streets will become a carpark. More public golf courses will likely be stolen in the name of green space. Continue…

Navigating the Victorian rental crisis
Roger Montgomery
May 8, 2024
In this week’s video insight, I explore the challenging dynamics of the Victorian rental market – a pressing issue that uniquely impacts both renters and investors. Amid a nationwide rental crisis, Victoria stands out due to its plummeting rental vacancy rates and the surprising exodus of investors from the market. Despite what seems like a prime scenario for property investors, with demand high and supply low, why are many opting to leave? I delve into the reasons behind the investor retreat, explore the economic forces at play, including significant tax increases and the broader implications of these changes. Continue…

Brett Craig
May 2, 2024
The long-awaited quarterly consumer price index (CPI) figure was reported last week. Over the March quarter, CPI rose by 1.0 per cent, which follows the previous 0.6 per cent December quarter increase. Over the 12 months to March 2024, CPI rose by 3.6 per cent. Whilst the annual rate of inflation is trending downwards, the quarterly figure increased by 0.4 per cent and poses ongoing challenges. Continue…

Spark your fire – Markets with Roger
Roger Montgomery
April 19, 2024
I joined Jas on the Spark your FIRE podcast to discuss the positive outlook for equities, especially innovative companies with strong growth potential. We highlighted how the current landscape of disinflation and economic growth sets the stage for firms with pricing power and discussed the rapid growth potential of small caps like Macquarie Technology (ASX:MAQ) and Megaport (ASX:MP1). Additionally, we explored the property market and emerging markets, and I spotlighted TUAS (ASX:TUA) as a stock pick worth considering. Continue…

A review of the Australian private credit market in 2023
Dean Curnow
March 4, 2024
2023 marked a year of both challenges and opportunities for the Australian private credit market. On the one hand, the tighter credit conditions in the first half of the year saw decreased activity in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), project finance and real estate development financing. On the other, the latter part of the year boasted a more stable interest rate and inflation outlook, as well as improved credit margins, supporting more resilient private credit portfolios.

Deflationary pressures in China – be careful what you wish for
David Buckland
February 7, 2024
Until recently, China’s decelerating inflation was welcomed by the West, as it led to lower imported prices and helped reduce inflationary pressures. However, China’s consumer prices fell for the third consecutive month in December 2023, delaying the expected rebound in economic activity following the lifting of COVID-19 controls. For calendar year 2023, CPI growth was negligible, whilst the producer price index declined by 3.0 per cent. Continue…
