2026 Budget Impact – Property flipping into Private Credit
Roger Montgomery
May 18, 2026
If you were thinking of buying a, say, a $2 million property to renovate and flip in 18 months, Labor’s 2026 budget just made that a perilous strategy, while also making investing in an AA rated Private Credit Fund way more attractive.
The 2026 Federal Budget has significantly shifted the goalposts for you. If you haven’t signed a contract yet, you are stepping into a very different tax environment than the one that existed last week.
In the current 2026 climate, a private credit fund returning 7.22 per cent as at 31 March 2026*, is almost certainly the superior choice for a $2 million allocation over an 18-month horizon.
*Returns are net of fees and assumes reinvestment of distributions. Past performance is not a reliable indication of future performance. Inception date 4 October 2022. continue…

Over The Money Fence – Why everything still feels so uncertain right now – and what it means for your money
Roger Montgomery
May 14, 2026
This week I am back with Over The Money Fence with Nicola Dale and Di Edwards.
This series aims to help you take control of your finances with clarity and confidence.
In this episode, I reassure Nicola and Di that despite everything that’s going on globally, it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to the economy and markets.
Are we in a recession? I discuss the cost-of-living crisis and how this is changing our spending habits, plus the latest pricing tricks used by supermarkets and airlines.
We also talk about property and why I believe that people who are predicting that property prices in Australia will fall by 40 per cent are wrong. continue…

Cutting through the noise – why Australian private credit stands apart
Roger Montgomery
April 21, 2026
With public markets more volatile there’s a growing focus on investments that can deliver regular income with less reliance on market movements.
Australian private credit stands out because it’s built more conservatively and with a clear focus on protecting investor capital, supported by a robust regulatory framework and the transparency of the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), which clearly defines lender priority. continue…

ABC Nightlife – rethinking portfolios in a changing market
Roger Montgomery
March 18, 2026
I joined Philip Clark on ABC Nightlife to discuss the shift toward a more volatile market environment in 2026. With inflation likely rising again, growth slowing and oil prices climbing, the key conditions that supported recent equity gains are fading. We also explored potential war scenarios involving Iran and how they could impact markets, inflation and interest rates.
Given this backdrop, I highlighted the need to rethink portfolio construction, with private credit emerging as a potential alternative offering attractive income with lower volatility. We also touched on rising fuel costs, price pressures on consumers, and broader structural challenges in Australia’s economy. continue…

Why I’m doubling down on the call to invest in Private Credit and Digital Income
Roger Montgomery
March 12, 2026
The traditional 60/40 portfolio approach is proving less effective at balancing risk and return in today’s environment, particularly as the historical relationship between equities and bonds has shifted. Where bonds once tended to rise when equities fell, both asset classes have at times moved in the same direction during periods of persistent inflation and policy uncertainty, weakening diversification benefits. At the same time, elevated equity valuations, increased concentration in major indices and higher government debt levels have contributed to a more volatile and policy-sensitive market backdrop. As a result, some investors are reassessing how capital is allocated and how diversification is achieved. continue…

Planting the seeds: Is this the best high-yield option for 2026?
Roger Montgomery
March 10, 2026
How to maximise your savings with higher-yield funds with competitive returns and risk.
Looking to make your money work harder this year? Whether you’re looking to fund a better lifestyle, build your nest egg or simply grow some savings, you may want to read this article.
For many retirees – and particularly people who may be navigating their finances independently for the first time – the stock market can feel less like an ‘opportunity’, and more like a rollercoaster you never asked to board. When you are at a stage in life where preserving what you’ve built is as important as growing it, the daily ups and downs of the stock market can keep anyone awake at night.
The traditional “safe” bets, like term deposits, often fail to keep pace with the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to earn. So, where do you turn when you want the yield of a high-performer but the stability of a fortress? continue…

Rethinking the core
Roger Montgomery
March 6, 2026
For decades, Australian and global investors seeking income have depended on a traditional “Core” fixed income allocation for their portfolios, mainly consisting of government-related debt and investment-grade corporate bonds. The result is the conventional 60/40 portfolio – a widely accepted blend of equities and fixed income (bonds).
Structural changes in liquidity, regulation, and market dominance, however, are occurring rapidly and may reduce the effectiveness of these old benchmarks. continue…

The risk of underspending in retirement
Roger Montgomery
March 3, 2026
I think a lot about how higher-yielding income products, such as the Aura Private Credit Income Fund and the Aura Core Income Fund, might fit in a retiree’s portfolio and how to articulate that.
It’s a challenge to explain, primarily because we don’t know the future. We don’t know how long we’ll live; we don’t know when/if the stock market might crash, and therefore we don’t know how much we can withdraw each year from our retirement savings because we don’t know how much we will spend in retirement, nor how much we’ll actually have left each year.
It leaves many investors paralysed; “I’ll worry about it tomorrow.” continue…

Roger Montgomery
March 2, 2026
This week I join Nicola and Di for the first 2026 episode of Over The Money Fence. This series aims to help you take control of your finances with clarity and confidence.
In this episode, we take a look at the changes that are currently happening in the world, and how that could impact our finances.
