Russell Muldoon
August 13, 2015
Do we have a property bubble in Australia? It’s a topic that has numerous sides to the debate; from supply, demand, debt levels and affordability. However, perhaps the best view of the state of Australia’s property market has rather silently and with little fanfare come straight from the prudential regulator of the Australian financial services industry. Continue…

Iron Ore’s Train Wreck
Roger Montgomery
August 5, 2015
When Iron Ore was trading above $120 we challenged the iron ore industry’s view that the commodity price would remain supported. Indeed in this post back in 2012 we noted; “FMG’s Nev Power reckons while iron ore prices have slumped to $US104 a tonne in recent days, “as soon as restocking and production returns to normal we expect to see prices back in the $US120 to $US150 per tonne range”.

Are you investing or speculating?
Tim Kelley
July 30, 2015
When you last bought a parcel of shares, were you investing or speculating? The term speculation carries some negative connotations, evoking thoughts of risk and recklessness, and is probably not one many of us would want to identify with. It’s a distinction that often arises in financial journalism and marketing, with money managers typically laying claim to the investor label to convey that what they are doing is good, wholesome and professional, and not prone to misadventure. Continue…

Value in REA-lty
Scott Shuttleworth
July 29, 2015
There’s no doubt that REA Group Limited (ASX: REA) has been an excellent performer in terms of share price over the past decade, it’s up over 2,600 per cent. We now ask, with questions arising about a potential housing bubble and maybe even a looming burst just around the corner, will REA be able to maintain this?
The answer may surprise you. Continue…

Size has its advantages in funds management, especially from a scale point of view. Will APRA remove some of the fuel from the housing fire?
Stuart Jackson
June 30, 2015
The Reserve Bank of Australia recently released private sector credit data which showed another month of strong growth. The RBA has raised concerns regarding the rate of growth in lending on speculative assets, and housing in particular, for some time. Glenn Stevens stated recently that he views some developments in the Sydney property market as “crazy” and “acutely concerning”. Continue…

In this interview with Ross Greenwood, Roger discusses the stock market over the past 5 years. He mentions that while the stock market has gone up circa 27 per cent, earnings have only grown by 5.5 per cent and this means that price appreciation is a result of a chase for yield. Listen here.

Leverage
Tim Kelley
May 19, 2015
Interesting to see the comments this week from ASIC chairman Greg Medcraft in relation to house prices, and the swift rebuttal from the Housing Industry Association (HIA). For those who came in late, the HIA position seems to be that there is currently no cause for alarm, although we could be in shaky territory in 12 months’ time if recent growth rates continue. ASIC, which presumably has no vested interest in continuing strong house prices, seems to be concerned that we may already be in bubble territory.

Canary in the coal mine
Roger Montgomery
May 6, 2015
Bond rates are rising. In the US 30-year Treasury Bonds rates have risen in the last week, and just as they did in 1994 (the year of the bond market crash), they are dragging long bond rates elsewhere in the world with them. In just four days Australian ten-year Treasury Bond rates have risen from 2.23 per cent to 2.85 per cent. If ten-year bond rates continue to rise, the argument for seeking higher yields in stocks weakens.
