Price and Value are two different things – just ask Canva investors
Roger Montgomery
June 3, 2022
With the share prices of tech stocks having cratered in recent months, there are perhaps few more opportune times than now to revisit the important difference between Price and Value. It may surprise investors that every business has a real worth or a true value that may bear no resemblance to the currently traded price. Continue…

The retailers that should weather the coming economic storm
Stuart Jackson
May 19, 2022
Conditions are about to get tougher for retailers as they face a perfect storm of falling incomes, galloping inflation, and rising interest rates. These impacts will crimp the discretionary spending power of many people. The one exception could be the under 25-year-old Gen Z demographic, who have fewer non-discretionary costs than other age groups. The retailers who sell to them could fare better than most. Continue…

A bad policy proposal
Andreas Lundberg
May 18, 2022
It is closing in on the election date and we are seeing some stupid proposals coming as politicians are worried over getting re-elected/elected. The LNP’s proposal for first home buyers to access their superannuation balances for a deposit for their first home purchase is one I am highlighting. I consider this a thoroughly bad proposal from an overall society point of view for several reasons. Continue…

Why Coles should benefit as food inflation starts to bite
Stuart Jackson
May 4, 2022
Suddenly we’re all talking about inflation – particularly food inflation, which has been spurred on by the recent floods. This ‘new normal’ should play well for the value end of food retailing, where the likes of Coles, Woolworths and Aldi are likely to grow market share at the expense of pricier retailers like Metcash. Coles’ recent sales update gives a glimpse of what’s in store. Continue…

It’s time to take advantage of share price falls
Roger Montgomery
May 3, 2022
The price-to-earnings ratios of many quality businesses have fallen sharply over the last six months. In many cases, the falls were justified. Now that valuations have dropped, I believe investors have a far better chance of making attractive returns. The proviso, of course, is that you buy businesses that grow their earnings. Continue…

Montgomery Small Companies Fund and investing over the longer term
Scott Phillips
April 28, 2022
We all know that equity markets don’t travel in a straight line, and that has been the case for equity markets over the last couple of years. Looking back at some of the major events that investors and equity markets have had to contend with, and we can list a global pandemic, massive monetary and fiscal stimulus in response, lock-downs like never seen before, then re-opening, supply constraints coupled with strong demand, a Russian invasion on Ukraine, now inflationary pressures across the globe, interest rates on the rise and meanwhile companies are adapting to the changing environment but ultimately trying to execute on delivering the best products or services to their customers and generate growing profits. Continue…

David Buckland

More Chinese property woes spell bad news for iron ore miners
Andreas Lundberg
March 29, 2022
Two recent news items on the problems besetting China’s Evergrande Group tell me that things are going from bad to worse for China’s second largest property developer. And Evergrande’s woes are not an isolated case – signs of distress are starting to emerge at other Chinese developers too. And that’s bad news for our iron ore miners, as property construction accounts for about 42 per cent of Chinese steel demand. Continue…
