Beware of a head fake, warns Goldman Sachs
Roger Montgomery
August 26, 2022
When it comes to investing, a head fake is an increase or decrease in market performance that is quickly followed by a shift in the opposite direction. And with the market bouncing off recent lows, that’s exactly what the analysts at Goldman Sachs are warning could soon occur as investors realise they became too excited too soon. Continue…

What the Supercheap and Adairs results tell us about the retail sector
Roger Montgomery
August 25, 2022
Some retailers – such as Supercheap Auto (ASX:SUL) – are reporting better than expected results this reporting season. But this hasn’t prevented many analysts from painting a gloomy picture of the retail sector, due largely to the impact of rising interest rates and inflation on consumers’ wallets. If they’re right, then there’s no need for investors to rush back in. Continue…

Are demergers a value opportunity for shareholders?
Roger Montgomery
August 24, 2022
De-merging single or multiple operating business units into a separate entity is also known as a “spinoff”. The result: incumbent investors are frequently faced with the consequences of a company in which they own shares, rolling out one of its businesses to create a separately listed company. Continue…

Why we’re wedded to quality
Roger Montgomery
August 24, 2022
In this week’s video insight Roger asks if another leg lower in the market transpires, what should you invest in? High quality businesses, when the price-to-earnings are compressed, are bound to generate great returns in the future. In fact, the lower the price you pay for a high-quality business, the higher your return will be. But what is a high-quality business? Continue…

Is the disaster over for this former market darling?
Roger Montgomery
August 18, 2022
In this article for Livewire Roger answers whether he would buy, hold or sell Magellan shares. It’s probably no surprise the Magellan Financial Group’s (ASX:MFG) management team are the first to admit it has been a “difficult year” filled with “significant challenges” that have seen its share price plunge more than 65 per cent over the past year. Why our small caps team likes IPH
Roger Montgomery
August 18, 2022
IPH Limited (ASX:IPH) is the leading intellectual property services group in the Asia Pacific region and its shares had fallen as much as 15 per cent from their 2020 highs, for no apparent reason, at which point Gary and Dominic from the Montgomery Small Companies Fund added it to the portfolio on the back of its defensive growth characteristics, strong balance sheet and monumental cash generation. The shares have subsequently rallied from $7.16 to $8.80 prior to today’s results announcement. Continue…

Has peak inflation passed?
Roger Montgomery
August 16, 2022
In this week’s video insight I ask the question has inflation peaked, and is this leading optimism in the stock market? Stocks rallied sharply last week based on the better-than-expected consumer inflation (CPI) data. Consequently the U.S. Central Bank and the Reserve Bank of Australia will keep increasing interest rates this year, but then cut them next year thanks to a recession. Are these expectations reasonable? I look at some charts to answer this in the video. Continue…

Are demergers a value opportunity for shareholders?
Roger Montgomery
August 8, 2022
Are demergers a value opportunity for shareholders? There has been no shortage of recent demerger examples to analyse in Australia with Tabcorp Holdings Ltd (ASX: TAH) spinning off The Lottery Corporation (ASX: TLC) and Woolworths Group (ASX: WOW) and Endeavour Group Ltd (ASX: EDV). There is a veritable mountain of research analysing equity performance post the demerger announcement. So do they actually add value for investors? I cover demergers and the risks in this piece for the ASX. Read here.

What to expect from markets in the week ahead
Roger Montgomery
August 8, 2022
Domestic results season is about to ramp up and investors like us will be focusing, in particular, on the outlook statements. You might recall there was a lot of optimism at the time of the half yearly results in February. Back then, a combination of reopening, rebuilding and expectations of a continuation of accommodative monetary policy was met abruptly, in late February, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Continue…

Chinese property woes point to more pain for our market
Andreas Lundberg
July 25, 2022
News about the Chinese construction sector keeps getting worse. That’s a major issue for our iron ore miners as Chinese property construction accounts for around one quarter of all seaborn iron ore demand. As our three biggest iron ore producers – BHP, Rio and Fortescue – make up a big chunk of the ASX200, I foresee darker days not just for these companies, but for the performance of the entire bourse. How KFC is making CKF a bear market winner
Roger Montgomery
June 30, 2022
Fast food businesses usually do well when times are tough, as many people – and families in particular – opt for less expensive places to eat out. It’s therefore no surprise that Collins Foods (ASX:CKF) – which operates KFC and Taco Bell in Australia and KFC in Europe – has outperformed the market. For the month ending 27 June, the Small Ordinaries Index fell eight per cent while CKF declined half that amount. Continue…

In May 2022 Montgomery announced a partnership with Aura Funds Management to offer their Australian credit strategies to Montgomery investors and interested parties. This is Montgomery’s first partnership outside of equities into credit and specifically private debt, which is a niche asset class getting a lot of attention for its consistent income and uncorrelated returns to those more traditional asset classes.
