Private Credit and the demographic tailwind
David Buckland
June 28, 2024
In this week’s video insight, I discuss the Baby Boomers looming retirement, and the importance of ensuring financial stability. With rising property costs and the need to replace lost income, finding reliable investments is essential. I highlight private credit as an option, offering the potential for returns with lower volatility. By diversifying investments, retirees can enhance their income, providing financial security throughout their retirement years. Additionally, I address how rising property prices impact young people, making it harder for them to afford homes. Continue…

The demographic boom investors must follow
Roger Montgomery
June 11, 2024
The combination of a growing cohort entering salaried employment for the first time, a very high proportion of that salary being disposable, and the first generation to be comfortably and familiarly globally connected through social media can have a stratospheric impact on the revenues of companies that drop a product that becomes a smash hit with Gen Z. Private credit transactions are everywhere
David Buckland
June 6, 2024
In this week’s video insight, I discuss the emerging prominence of private credit transactions in Australia. Following our partnership with Aura Credit Holdings two years ago, we’ve observed a growing interest in private credit as a reliable income source for investors, especially those with self-managed super funds. Recent investments by major international firms into this asset class further underscore its growing appeal. Continue…

Are we about to see increased property market volatility?
Roger Montgomery
May 30, 2024
Australia is currently witnessing challenging dynamics in the property market, where the costs and complexities associated with owning investment properties often outweigh the potential returns. Are high interest rates, increasing taxes, and rising maintenance expenses making property investment less attractive?

Just how small are small cap companies?
Michael Gollagher
May 27, 2024
One of the questions we get asked often is about the size of the companies that we can invest in with the Montgomery Small Companies Fund. So, I thought we would take a moment to have a look at the S&P ASX Small Ordinaries Index so we can understand some of the names in the market that could form part of our fund and investment universe. How understanding demographic shifts can help investors
Roger Montgomery
May 17, 2024
Investors understand the power of demographic information. Back in the early 1990s, when I was presenting to investors at ASX-sponsored conferences, I recall ‘time-lining’ the baby boomers and predicting – reasonably successfully, I might add – what industries the boomers would have a substantial impact on. Half-year performance: A comparative analysis of Australia’s big four banks
Roger Montgomery
May 13, 2024
It has been a while since we reported on the major banks, which have now all provided half-year updates to their operating performance.
Before reporting on their results, I think it worthwhile to provide you with a usefully simplified framework for analysing or comparing a bank’s performance. Despite claims of complexity in their reporting and differentiation in their offerings, the big four banks are relatively simple businesses to understand at a high level, and broadly undifferentiated, offering everyday banking, loans, credit cards, wealth management and insurance. How to handle market correction if it hits
Roger Montgomery
April 30, 2024
The chorus of investors who believe the market is due for a correction is growing louder, and the list of reasons is growing longer.
I have some sympathy with the view the market could pull back. I believe there is an ever-present risk of such pullbacks, so if one should emerge, it would not be surprising. Additionally, I have no belief in anyone’s ability to forecast the precise timing of such a pullback consistently, so now could be as good a time as any. Continue…

Polen Capital
April 19, 2024
During the March 2024 quarter, the Polen Capital Global Growth Fund (the Fund) increased by 12.49 per cent in Australian dollars, while its benchmark, the MSCI ACWI Net Total Return Index, in Australian Dollars, returned 13.10 per cent. Liquidity, not popularity, is what you should be watching
Roger Montgomery
April 17, 2024
The frequency of calls that the market is in a euphoric bubble is increasing. It’s worth exploring some of the evidence used to reach that conclusion before deciding whether now is the time to adopt a more cautious stance and to ready oneself for the benefits lower prices deliver. Continue…

A strong start to 2024
Roger Montgomery
April 8, 2024
The S&P500 is up 10 per cent in the first quarter of calendar 2024. Another useless fact is that the S&P 500’s rally set 22 new records in 2024 alone, and its market value has grown by over U.S.$9 trillion since late October.
It’s worth reflecting on our prediction from last year that innovative growth stocks would outperform mega-cap tech stocks in 2024 as investors broadened their risk appetite to include small caps. Continue…

Tesla is not a Magnificent 7
Roger Montgomery
March 20, 2024
It appears investors have finally woken up to the reality about electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers; they are just car companies with car company economics. It was always right to question Tesla’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) inclusion in the Magnificent 7. They are a group of companies that only have share price appreciation in common. However, Tesla has always been a bit of an outlier because it lacked one thing the other six have – pricing power. More about that shortly. Continue…

What! How much do you need for a comfortable retirement?
Roger Montgomery
March 15, 2024
New spending figures published by the Association of Superannuation Fund of Australia (ASFA) define what it means to be comfortable in retirement. And while their numbers are well above the current age pension payments, I am not sure even those elevated numbers realistically measure up to what many, if not most, people would describe as comfortable. Continue…

Interest rates, the best it gets. It’s time to deploy cash
Roger Montgomery
March 7, 2024
In the ever-changing landscape of financial markets, 2023 defied expectations, with highly anticipated recessions in Australia and the U.S. failing to materialise. But the macroeconomic insights of Gavekal Research, from all the way back to 1978 – that innovative growth stocks with pricing power do well amid disinflation and positive economic growth –, has proven consistently prescient. Highlighting observations and historical trends, I delve into why innovative growth companies, particularly those in the small-cap sector, are poised for significant gains after a period focused mainly on mega-cap technology stocks.
