Audinate Group: the growth worth listening to
Michael Gollagher
February 26, 2024
As we sift through the results from our companies over the first reporting season of the year, we watch with great interest as the market is reminded that company fundamental results still matter. We have seen macroeconomic speculation influencing market returns and share prices significantly over the last 18 months, rather than, in some cases, consideration for the fundamental changes occurring within some companies at a base level. Continue…

Reporting season: my thoughts so far
Roger Montgomery
February 20, 2024
The domestic economic backdrop, characterised by 13 interest rate hikes, and consumer malaise brought on by the persistent inflation-induced cost of living pressures, had set the stage for modest, if not dour, expectations for reporting season. Continue…

Roger Montgomery
February 20, 2024
Global premium appliance brand owner Breville Group’s (ASX:BRG) recent half-yearly results released on 13 February have stirred mixed reactions among analysts and investors. There was a slight disappointment in sales, although this was overshadowed by improved gross margins and efficient cost control measures. Continue…

Roger Montgomery
February 16, 2024
In this week’s video insight, I explore the recent performance of the retail sector. Companies like Cettire, Temple & Webster, Nick Scali, and JBHi-Fi have surprised analysts with their robust performance, leading to a reassessment of sales projections. I discuss the unexpected resilience of retailers in the face of January’s challenges and discuss the implications of these developments for the future. Continue…

Another day, another set of good results delivered this reporting season
Roger Montgomery
February 15, 2024
Reporting season is the gift that keeps on giving. Following on from our reporting of the great results from online retailers Cettire (ASX:CTT) and Temple & Webster (ASX:TPW), results from several other holdings are also encouraging. Seven Group (ASX:SVW), IDP Education (ASX:IEL), and Audinate (ASX:AD8) have all reported, and the initial response from the market has been positive. Continue…

Deflationary pressures in China – be careful what you wish for
David Buckland
February 7, 2024
Until recently, China’s decelerating inflation was welcomed by the West, as it led to lower imported prices and helped reduce inflationary pressures. However, China’s consumer prices fell for the third consecutive month in December 2023, delaying the expected rebound in economic activity following the lifting of COVID-19 controls. For calendar year 2023, CPI growth was negligible, whilst the producer price index declined by 3.0 per cent. Continue…

How to maximise your returns in 2024 and beyond
Roger Montgomery
February 6, 2024
I recently wrote about my two big forecasts for 2024. One was that private credit would gain traction as an important asset class and would also feature more prominently in advised portfolios, especially for those seeking uncorrelated returns, lower volatility, and regular attractive income. I also stuck my neck on the block and suggested that if disinflation and positive economic growth dominate the economic backdrop, investors will adopt more risk and buy select small-cap stocks, closing the gap that emerged in 2023 between them and the mega-cap technology companies. Continue…

Rocket fuel for small caps – three takeovers announced
Roger Montgomery
December 18, 2023
If you aren’t already aware I am optimistic about the prospect for small caps in 2024. Provided we have a combination of positive economic growth (even a short technical recession won’t upset my thesis) and a continuation of the disinflation that has informed the path of consumer prices over the last year, innovative small cap growth companies have the opportunity to catch up to mega-caps that dominated the investment landscape in 2023. Continue…

Aura High Yield SME Fund: Low dispersion of returns and no negative months (to date)
David Buckland
December 13, 2023
The standard deviation, or measure of the amount of variation, of the S&P/ASX 300 Accumulation Index over the period between 1 August 2017 and 31 October 2023 was 15.2 per cent. One standard deviation (or plus or minus 15.2 per cent) means the dispersion around the average occurs 68 per cent of the time, whilst two standard deviations (or plus or minus 30.4 per cent) means the dispersion around the average occurs 95 per cent of the time. The interest rate conundrum: Conflicting forecasts from banking giants
Roger Montgomery
December 11, 2023
In this week’s video insight I wanted to discuss the contrasting predictions from Australia’s major banks regarding interest rates, painting a nuanced picture of the economic landscape. Shayne Elliott from ANZ anticipates sustained rate hikes amid escalating growth pressures. In contrast, NAB’s Ross McEwan suggests rates might have peaked, while CBA hints at a possible rate cut. These varied perspectives hold significant implications for households with mortgages and investors. Continue…

Highlights from ChatGPT’s first year: AI evolution unpacked.
Roger Montgomery
December 4, 2023
It’ll be a surprise to many but last week, on November 30, was ChatGPT’s first birthday. While many see Artificial Intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM) as humanlike, AI’s first year has been nothing like the first year of a human’s life. A human child’s first year is mostly consumed with sleeping and feeding. ChatGPT’s first year has been far more dramatic. Continue…

Boosting your portfolio’s cash component in a high inflation environment
David Buckland
December 1, 2023
On the day of the Melbourne Cup, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced an increase of the official cash rate to 4.35 per cent. Interestingly, the term deposit rates offered by my friendly bank remained the same as the previous week. This suggested an unwillingness of the bank to increase interest rates on deposits, despite the 13th RBA official cash rate hike in the past 18 months. Continue…

Temple & Webster’s share price soars following its AGM update
Roger Montgomery
November 30, 2023
As we monitor the behavior of the Australian consumer, it’s crucial to acknowledge that consumption constitutes approximately 50 per cent of Australia’s GDP, significantly influencing decisions related to interest rates. The robust trading update presented during the annual general meeting (AGM) by Temple & Webster Group (ASX: TPW), an online retailer specialising in furniture and homewares, prompts thoughtful consideration. The RBA acknowledges boomers win and mortgagees lose
Roger Montgomery
November 29, 2023
Central banks across the globe find themselves in a challenging predicament, and our own Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) faces a particularly delicate situation. In Australia, an intricate interplay of demographics and home ownership dynamics creates a paradox where those who bear the brunt of rising interest rates are not the ones fuelling the inflationary fire through their spending habits. Why I believe REA Group is one of Australia’s highest quality businesses
Roger Montgomery

I believe REA Group (ASX:REA), is one of Australia’s highest-quality businesses. REA Group’s online portal – realestate.com.au – is the go-to destination for people wanting to buy, sell or rent property. Price rises in all property related areas have led to substantial revenue and earnings growth and have turbo-charged REA Group’s share price. Continue…

Ausbiz – Winners are grinners: how boomers are benefiting from inflation
Roger Montgomery
November 24, 2023
In my recent interview with Ausbiz, I aimed to spotlight the differential impact of rising interest rates on different age groups in Australia. Specifically, I emphasized how baby boomers tend to thrive in such conditions, while the younger generation, particularly those managing mortgages, face a contrasting scenario. Additionally, I delved into the intricate dynamics of domestic inflation and discussed socio-economic consequences arising from intergenerational disparities. Watch the full interview here. As a result of the corporatisation of restaurants, there’s a plethora of them. The emergence of the Restaurant Group – Merrivale, Bentley, and The Speakeasy Group are examples which offer a business solution to the cost of independence through bulk buying power (for food and fit-outs) and merged accounting and marketing functions.
