Farewell 2021, hello 2022
David Buckland
January 6, 2022
Given the sell-off in bond yields so far this year, rising inflationary expectations, and the collapse of the Evergrande Group in China, it is unsurprising many global share market indices took a breather and recorded a relatively lacklustre December 2021 half-year in terms of performance. Continue…

Why we should be worried about the AdBlue shortage
Roger Montgomery
December 10, 2021
If you haven’t already heard about the looming shortage of AdBlue, you soon will. You see, AdBlue, is needed to run the diesel engines of trucks and farm machinery and hospital generators. And, according to some industry players, Australia will run out in February 2022. So this is a major problem, and could lead to a national transport crisis. Continue…

What bicycle prices tell us about today’s inflation numbers
Roger Montgomery
December 5, 2021
In a sign that inflation may be stickier than once thought, Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, no longer describes it as ‘transitory’. And if you’ve been shopping for a bicycle of late, you’d probably agree. This is highlighted in a recent story by The Wall Street Journal, which gives a fascinating insight into the impact on prices of pandemic-inspired goods demand, and supply chain bottlenecks. Unemployment figures surprise negatively
Andreas Lundberg
November 15, 2021
On Thursday 11 of November, the monthly unemployment numbers from ABS were released and disappointed the market by increasing by 0.6 percentage points from 4.6 per cent in October to 5.2 per cent. The consensus amongst forecasters was a slight increase to 4.8 per cent so we can understand that the market took this negatively as it is quite a large variation and also a sharp reversal of the trend of falling unemployment that we have seen since the peak at the initial phase of the pandemic. Continue…

How restrictive work practices at ports are costing us more
Roger Montgomery
November 11, 2021
According to a new report by the ACCC, imported goods are costing us all far more than they should. And it’s largely because enterprise agreements covering stevedores at our container ports contain provisions that limit the ability of port operators to automate, cut labour costs and choose who they hire. These provisions are hampering productivity, increasing disruptions, and driving up the cost of goods. Continue…

Despite the lockdowns, JB Hi-Fi continues to show the strength of its brand
Roger Montgomery
November 1, 2021
The past few months have been tough for most retailers so it was heartening to see JB Hi-Fi’s first quarter 2022 sales results. Despite having to shut over half its stores during the period, the electronics and white goods retailer only reported a small drop in year-on-year sales. With the economy – and stores – opening up again, the numbers point to another strong year. Continue…

Three things we’ve learnt from AGM season
Roger Montgomery
October 28, 2021
With annual general meeting (AGM) season underway, we’re starting to see some interesting trends. One is that, overall, results have been better than expected. Another is that, in Australia, margins are coming under pressure as inflation starts to bite. And a third is that the retail sector is experiencing a subdued start to FY22 – perhaps because many of us satiated our shopping urges during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Continue…

Did JobKeeper waste $40bn of public money?
Andreas Lundberg
October 27, 2021
Australia’s Department of the Treasury has just released a report into the JobKeeper Payment scheme. It shows that vast sums of money were transferred from taxpayers to companies that – in hindsight – should not have qualified for assistance. This includes almost $14 billion to businesses whose turnover increased during the lockdowns. This mis-use of taxpayer money leaves me with three big questions. Continue…
