Why I think house prices will keep going up
Roger Montgomery
March 18, 2021
Australia is in the grip of its biggest property price boom in more than a decade. The boom is motivated in no small part by a fear of missing out. But there are also other important factors at play, leading me to believe that this trend could continue for some time. Continue…

Why we continue to like Uniti Group
Roger Montgomery
March 11, 2021
David Buckland has been writing about telecommunications services company Uniti Group (ASX: UWL) since March 2019 – just a month after the company listed on the ASX, when the share price was about 20 cents. Today, Uniti shares are around $2.20. That’s better than the proverbial 10-bagger in just two years. And we think there’s more share price growth to come. Continue…

SMSF cost analysis
Scott Phillips
February 15, 2021
The success of the Australian superannuation system, envied by most governments around the world has now grown to encompass close on $3 trillion of assets. This is broadly split between three different types of fund – Public Sector/Industry/ Corporates, Retail and Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF). The proponents of each type often battle it out in the court of public debate as to the merits of each type and one of the fronts of attack is often on the topic of cost! Continue…

Own the bank not a bank deposit
Roger Montgomery
February 12, 2021
After 37 years of declining interest rates that have fuelled asset price increases but laid waste to lower-risk income streams, it is perhaps surprising that now should be the time to be discussing dividends. But dividends are back in the spotlight, in no small part due to pronouncements by central bankers including the US Federal Reserve’s Jerome Powell and the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Phillip Lowe that low short-term rates are here to stay, perhaps for years. Continue…

Don’t poke the China bear
David Buckland
December 16, 2020
The Reserve Bank of Australia is taking us down the Japanese and European path, obsessed with record low interest rates whilst spending little time on productivity growth. Following “emergency low interest rates” of 3.0 per cent during the Global Financial Crisis, the current 0.1 per cent cash rate is causing havoc amongst the retired generation, which number 4 million people or 15 per cent of our population. This generation unfortunately face Hobsons choice of going up the risk curve, often speculating on risk assets, or eating into their capital. Continue…

Why I think share markets will boom in 2021
Roger Montgomery
December 15, 2020
As 2020 draws to a close, the finance world is awash with market commentators making bold predictions for the year ahead. For what it’s worth, here’s mine: I think 2021 could see a surge in asset prices driven by the rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine, loose money supply and pent-up consumer demand. Continue…

Many government incentives and schemes offered by both the national and state governments released this year have been to support the property market. Are Australian house prices on track to surpass pre-COVID levels in 2021? Listen here.

Roger Montgomery
November 17, 2020
At Montgomery we have always kept an eye on the residential property market. Roger Montgomery
October 27, 2020
The share prices of growth companies – particularly quality businesses such as the much heralded FAAMGs – have been on a tear since March. How much further could they go? Well, quite a bit further I think, if rates stay low and governments keep providing financial support. Continue…

Roger Montgomery
October 19, 2020
With interest rates heading to zero, keeping your money in the bank has become a poor way to increase – or even preserve – your wealth. Is it worth investing in bonds with yields so low?
Scott Phillips
October 16, 2020
The typical balanced portfolio being a 60/40 mix of growth assets to defensive (bonds) has been a mainstay of investors for many decades. But with 10-year Australian government bond yields at just 0.84 per cent and inflation running somewhere around 1.8 per cent (as seen in Figure 1), the return you get on the yield from your risk free Australian 10 year treasury bond is trailing inflation by around 1 per cent per annum.
