Are we likely to see a correction or crash from the COVID-19 situation?
Roger Montgomery
September 13, 2021
Crashes tend to occur when investors are surprised by something. The unexpected or the ‘black swan’ event is what triggers fear and financial protectionism among investors. There are several reasons why I believe investors can be optimistic about the market over the next year or so, notwithstanding a temporary pull-back of 10-15 per cent is always possible and should be considered a normal part of every investors journey. Continue…

Why I think Scentre Group shares are still good value
Andreas Lundberg
August 26, 2021
In March 2020, during the COVID-19 sell-off, the share price of shopping mall company, Scentre Group (ASX:SCG), hit a low of $1.51. It’s been a bumpy ride since then, with more lockdowns, but the share price has recovered nicely. And the company’s FY21 results paint a picture of a business in reasonable shape and still trading at a steep discount to the value of its net tangible assets. Continue…

Roger Montgomery

So far, reporting season has delivered for many investors. Conducive trading conditions for banks, miners, technology companies and many retailers have resulted in increased dividends and share buybacks, while the overall market has leapt to fresh highs. Why REA could be a better way to invest in property
Roger Montgomery
August 16, 2021
According to a recent rent report by Domain, gross rental yields have dived to around 4 per cent on the back of soaring property prices. This makes direct investment in property less appealing than it once was. But there are other ways to profit from Australia’s obsession with property. And one of those is via online real estate advertising company, REA Group (ASX:REA). Continue…

Regulatory crackdown on the education sector and China related stocks
Roger Montgomery
August 10, 2021
As you know I am a big fan of the team at Polen having invested at the Australian inception of the Polen Capital Global Growth Fund. When the Chinese government articulated its love-hate relationship with the computer gaming industry and announced a crackdown on kids gaming it came as some relief to hear the Polen Capital team had made portfolio changes. Polen’s update follows, and it provides a valuable insight into the team’s processes and philosophy. Continue…

Why asset price inflation is set to continue
Roger Montgomery
August 3, 2021
Soaring house prices in Australia and overseas are but one aspect of the asset price inflation that is now gripping much of the world. While this may be good for the owners of those assets, it is leading to increased inequality within and between countries. And that’s a phenomenon that, history shows, often ends badly. Continue…

Chinese afterschool tutoring industry given the regulatory cane
David Buckland
July 30, 2021
The Chinese government has just released a number of new regulations for its USD $100 billion after school tutoring industry (AST). The new regulations effectively eliminate most of the sector and materially impair the current capital deployed in these industries. Continue…

What can we learn from the investing themes of FY21?
Joseph Kim
July 16, 2021
July is a natural time for us to review the financial year just past – both in terms of The Montgomery Fund as well as the investment journey of the broader market. The 2021 financial year was unprecedented in many ways, not just because the last 12 months has seemed more like an extension of the initial COVID-19 fallout of the June 2020 quarter, but also because of the volatility witnessed in the broader market given the rapid pace of developments in a suddenly “less predictable” world. The 3 red lines that could bring iron ore prices back to earth
Andreas Lundberg
July 1, 2021
Chinese property construction accounts for close to 30 per cent of world seaborn iron ore demand, and is probably the most important demand driver impacting the iron ore price. But with Chinese regulators trying to crimp the sector, population growth turning negative, and urbanization peaking, I think today’s lofty iron ore price will prove to be short-lived. Continue…

It is always interesting chatting about the big macroeconomic forces impacting and influencing corporate profits, property prices and job prospects. But our main game is investing. Why property prices should continue to climb
Roger Montgomery
June 8, 2021
CoreLogic has just reported that national dwelling prices rose by 2.3 per cent in May. That’s an annualised rate of more than 28 per cent. And with lenders continuing to provide cheap and easy access to credit, and investors showing lots of interest, I don’t see the property market cooling off any time soon. Continue…

Could Biden’s latest pronouncement spell the end of the Bull Market?
Roger Montgomery
April 24, 2021
Tax is a very powerful driver of behaviour. For local evidence we only need to look at Australian property prices. While long-term, immigration drives property prices, and in the shorter-term access to credit, these influences occur under the umbrella of very favourable tax conditions combined with the willingness of banks, regulators and the government to allow buyers to use massive amounts of leverage to purchase their main residence. Continue…

Why we think NSR is an exceptional REIT
Gary Rollo
April 22, 2021
The real estate investment trust sector is not a traditional hunting ground for the Montgomery Small Companies Fund. REITs tend to be passive asset owners or rent collectors. So they’re not a natural fit for our philosophy of investing in talented management teams that can generate compounding wealth for our investors. But National Storage REIT (ASX:NSR) is an exception. Continue…

Why I’m still bullish on residential property prices
Roger Montgomery
April 7, 2021
Across Australia, property prices are on a tear, driven for a change by owner-occupiers rather than investors. What’s more, I’m convinced that prices have much further to run, fuelled by low interest rates and supportive government policies. Continue…

Why government should not water down responsible lending laws
Andreas Lundberg
March 23, 2021
Last year, in direct contradiction to a key recommendation of the Banking Royal Commission, the Federal Government put forward a proposal to ‘relax’ lending standards by the banks. Thankfully, a vote on the legislation has now been put on hold, and I’m hoping the proposal will be shelved completely. Continue…
