Scott Shuttleworth
March 24, 2015
As readers of our blog will know, the funds of Montgomery Investment Management have held shares in Burson Group Limited (ASX: BAP) since its initial public offering (IPO) in early 2014. Since that time Burson has delivered stellar returns (circa 50 per cent in a year) and it’s interesting to contrast our reasons for entering the position with our thoughts now. Continue…

As you may have read in the press, NBN Co Limited intends to expand its rollout over the coming year such that they’ll achieve 2.5 million serviceable connections by 2016. Considering this in the context of NBN Co’s performance, there’s obviously some work to do before we hit the rosy heights of 2.5 million customers. Continue…

It’s Coco-nuts!
Roger Montgomery
February 16, 2015
Chasing yield, wherever it can be found, is a pastime for many baby boomers whose income returns from traditional securities and bank deposits are being decimated. The fad global and Basel III banking capital requirements are potentially legitimising some securities, that under normal interest rate settings, might not have seen the light of day. Continue…

What we do and don’t like about Tassal
Tim Kelley
February 16, 2015
Atlantic Salmon producer, Tassal Group (ASX: TGR) has caught our eye recently. Although the business does not have a great economic track record, it appears that performance has been steadily progressing, following a period of substantial capital investment and management focus, and the half year result just released shows a continuing improvement trend. Is there early pressure from the collapsing oil and gas price?
David Buckland
February 6, 2015
In late 2013, I wrote a number of blogs on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) concluding that unless the industry cost structure in Australia changes and productivity improves, there are unlikely to be any new offshore “green field” LNG projects, except for Floating LNG facilities. Continue…

SAE it ain’t so

February 5, 2015
Companies that can reinvest large amounts of capital at high rates of return are a rare breed. Such companies must be careful to preserve value when pursuing growth outside of their core competency, especially if management becomes distracted by new business opportunities. Continue…

How does the Australian Market Measure Up?
Tim Kelley
February 5, 2015
We have found the market to be a little frustrating in recent times. Through the various market ups and downs the sort of high quality companies we like to invest in have generally remained well-supported, whereas many of the lower-quality companies – a large number of them related to resources, have been getting cheaper. Given the uncertain prospects for this latter group, our overall feeling is that the market does not offer particularly good value at the moment, and we have a significant proportion of our funds in cash. Continue…

Vocation, vocation, vocation
Scott Shuttleworth
February 2, 2015
After a review of the events leading up to Vocation Limited’s (ASX: VET) recent announcement (see here), you may just feel like a vacation. Events such as these can create utter destruction in the wealth of shareholders, which is unfortunate, however they also offer valuable lessons in what to watch out for. Below I’ve prepared a brief chronology of events for Vocation over the last 6 months or so. Continue…

Greased Lightning
Ben MacNevin
January 23, 2015
The sudden fall in the oil price in the December 2014 half-year was unexpected by the market, but the speed of contraction in oil-related investment should come as no surprise. As the German economist Rudi Dornbusch observed, “In economics, things take longer to happen than you think they will and then happen faster than you thought they could”. Continue…

Did Christmas come at all?
Russell Muldoon
January 21, 2015
Following on from our anecdotal feedback we posted last week that Christmas trading came very, very late for retailers, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has trumped even our most negative expectations.
ACCI produce a quarterly survey of a group of businesses and their investing confidence. The latest survey for the December 2014 quarter described the all-important Christmas retailing period as “the worst for 23 years”. Continue…

Russell Muldoon
December 5, 2014
Following on from our recent blog post here and our Head of Research, Tim Kelley’s video blog – on the changing supermarket industry landscape – we are naturally watching the developments in the sector closely (from the sidelines), taking a keen interest in the half year result reported this week by Metcash Limited (ASX:MTS).
To quickly summarise: their half year results showed continued deterioration to which the market has reacted accordingly, with their share price down circa 27 per cent since. Continue…
