Borrowing to invest just adds to market volatility
Roger Montgomery
April 18, 2017
Before I begin, let me add a caveat. Here I am always referring to something of quality. By that I mean the asset about which I speak has an enduring characteristic and or its long run worth will be higher because it will earn more in the future than it does today thanks to inflation or an ability to reinvest profits at attractive rates of return.

Stuart Jackson
March 31, 2017
One of the drivers behind the recent bank rally has been a perception we are over the worst of the risks around increasing regulatory capital requirements. But are we? A report card from the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision indicates this view might be a little premature. If so, there could be ramifications for banks and property investors alike. Continue…

Are we “wrong” on property?
Roger Montgomery
March 21, 2017
Before we begin, thank you all sincerely for your engaging comments and your feedback here on the blog. And the thanks even extend to those whose disagreement is so vitriolic that their comments cannot be published. Fortunately, as investors we are used to disagreement; every time we buy a share, the seller has the completely opposite view. So, keep the comments coming – we may not publish your expletives but we always enjoy the process of investigating and understanding the divergent views. Continue…

Retailers make hay while the sun shines
Roger Montgomery
February 15, 2017
Furniture and appliance retailers, like JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman, are enjoying their best trading conditions in a decade, buoyed by low interest rates and a renovation boom. Alas, these sunny conditions won’t last. And there’s more for the retailers to worry about than rising interest rates putting a clamp on demand. There’s also the small matter of Amazon setting up ‘down under’. Continue…

Warning signs from China mean it’s time to check your exposure
Roger Montgomery
February 13, 2017
When the Chinese government recently tightened capital controls to further reduce capital outflows, it sent a message to the world that all is not right with its currency.
