Discounts a plenty in the LICs market
Scott Phillips
April 22, 2016
The rather lackluster start to the year from both Australian Equities and Global Equities (in Australian dollars) has been met with an increased number of LICs (Listed Investment Companies) trading at discounts to their Net Tangible Assets backing. In fact 59 out of the 87 LICs trading on the ASX now trade at a discount, with 29 of them trading at a discount of more than 10 per cent. Continue…

Roger Montgomery
April 20, 2016
Sydney property was a star performer in 2015 and a lucrative earner for many real estate agents. But 2016 has turned into a horror year for McGrath Estate Agents. A recent downgrade in its profit forecast for the year saw its shares plunge just four months after listing.

Cash just won’t cut it; focus on companies that are growing
Roger Montgomery
April 4, 2016
Make no mistake. The good times are over. That’s about as succinctly as I can put it. From now on returns from property and stocks in aggregate will be mediocre. Of course, the very best quality companies and properties will produce better returns but the averages, as measured by the All Ordinaries and median house prices, will disappoint.

David Buckland
March 15, 2016
China’s cement demand peaked in 2014 at 2.48 billion tonnes or 1.81 tonnes per capita based on 1.37 billion people. This is 2.5 times the per capita demand in both Japan and the US (0.7 tonnes) and 1.4 times the per capita demand in the high-density cement markets of Taiwan and Korea (1.3 tonnes). Continue…

How and when to buy real estate
Roger Montgomery
February 24, 2016
Will Rogers infamously suggested real estate was the best investment in the world because no more was being made. He obviously wasn’t considering how many apartments could be constructed on a postage stamp of land nor do I expect he had Singapore in mind; In the two photos following you can see that Raffles Hotel on Beach Road in Singapore is one block back from the beach. Between it and the coast sits the Britannia Club building. In the second image Raffles is partly obscured by the roof of a high rise building in the foreground but the Britannia Club now has a green painted roof in the section of land marked for sale. A Value Investing Great
Roger Montgomery
February 19, 2016

Its Chairman was one Charles T Munger, now 91 years of age, and who, in my opinion was the brains behind Berkshire’s success – Warren Buffett while no slouch in the IQ stakes also provided the temperament essential to being able to pull the trigger on very large bets. Stocks we like – Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
Ben MacNevin
February 3, 2016
As the global commodity rout continues, investors are searching for sectors that can provide safe haven for their capital. Many are seeking exposure to the anticipated growth benefits of an ageing population, which has caused some healthcare stocks to trade at levels that are difficult to justify. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (ASX: FPH) is one such company, whose NZ$8.50 share price is factoring in considerable earnings growth, but such is its prospects we feel the company may present reasonable value. Continue…
