A good year for active fund managers
Tim Kelley
June 20, 2013
Some interesting results from the latest Mercer data on Australian fund manager performance: in the year to May, the average Australian share fund manager managed to beat the S&P/ASX300 Accumulation index by 2.6%. While it is common for the best performing managers to beat the index by large margins, it’s less common for the average fund manager to beat the index by this much. In the 3 years prior, for example, the average fund manager beat the index by a much smaller 0.6%. Continue…

Too early for bargains?
Roger Montgomery
June 11, 2013
Author Rob Schultheis wrote: “…there’s a silent voice in the wilderness that we hear only when no one else is around. When you go far, far beyond, out across the netherlands of the Known, the din of human static slowly fades away, over and out.”
For over a year we have felt like the voice Schultheis wrote about, but knowing always that it is when the din of human static catches on that we will start to see some very dramatic adjustments. Continue…

A look at Fleetwood
Ben MacNevin
June 5, 2013
Fleetwood is a business that specializes in building two forms of accommodation – homes with wheels (e.g. caravans), and villages for miners. As such, the company’s share price is highly exposed to the mining cycle – it increased from $2 at the start of 2003 to peak above $10 in 2007. The share price then plunged below $4 in 2008. From this trough it again surged, this time to $14 in 2011, but has since fallen back to $4. Continue…

The recession in resources gathers pace…
Roger Montgomery
May 22, 2013
As you must well know by now, we have been suggesting investors be wary of mining and mining services companies for over a year and half. Now that the somewhat predictable recession is occurring, most of the commentary centres on the present malaise.

The resources industry is in recession – so get ready to eat Kopi Luwak
Roger Montgomery
May 17, 2013
Kopi Luwak refers to the beans of coffee berries once they have been eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet. Passing through a civet’s intestines, the beans are then defecated with other fecal matter and collected, dried and eaten or drunk… or perhaps eaten by drunks.

Back in January (you can find our older post here), we produced the following table showing how, since 2010, Credit Corp Group (ASX: CCP) management have generally been conservative when providing initial guidance on the year ahead, and then how they have announced upgrades in a useful, if not predictable, way each November, February and May.

The Australian dollar needs to fall
Roger Montgomery
April 30, 2013
Australia’s triple AAA credit rating, strong commodity exports and high interest rates have meant that many have enjoyed the benefits of a high Australian dollar.
Variously described as the Little Aussie Battler, Pacific Peso and the Aussie Ringgit, the Australian currency has now traded for the longest period of time above parity against the US dollar since it was floated in 1983.

Decisions fit for governments?
Roger Montgomery
April 18, 2013
The recent discussions we have engaged in here – about governments being unwilling to borrow, and separately, how the balance of payments’ current deficit is ‘structural’ only because of a lack of long-term thinking – have generated enormous feedback from every corner of our great country. Interestingly and encouragingly, the issues are part of vernacular across all demographics and socio-economic groups.
At the heart of the issues however (and keep in mind the ‘heart’ has many chambers) is the question about whether the government is the right entity to make important capital allocation decisions.

The view from the top of Australia…
Roger Montgomery
April 16, 2013
It was interesting to read in yesterday’s Australian Financial Review that auction clearance rates surged past 70% at the weekend. There’s almost an air of desperation at some auctions. The fear of missing out is a much greater influence on investor behaviour than the fear of loss.

Trouble brewing? Coal seam gas and the water table (part 2)
David Buckland
April 5, 2013
Earlier this week, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Reform Council said that the Commonwealth had now set up the “Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Mining Development” (IESC). This will give governments solid scientific advice on the potential effects of CSG and large mining developments on water resources. In the five years to 2010/11, CSG has increased from 2% to 11% of Australia’s total gas production (read the media release).

The NEW NORMAL from the horse’s mouth.
Roger Montgomery
March 23, 2013
Jeremy Grantham is a Co-founder and Chief Investment Strategist of Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo also known as (GMO). He has 44 years experience and is also the founder of one of the first index funds in the 1970’s. With about US $100 billion in funds under management, he is also the founder of one of the world’s biggest if not the biggest managers.
He is a contrarian and just last week was quoted as saying: “I bought more long-term Treasuries in the last month than I’ve bought in four years. I am a fan of Treasuries now. I wasn’t a fan of Treasuries in July.”He believes in and indeed coined the term, The New Normal – lower rates of growth for the US permanently.
