Ausbiz – is 2025 the year for small caps?
David Buckland
January 23, 2025
I joined Ausbiz to discuss the 2025 market landscape, exploring themes like whether the return of President Trump is driving market sentiment. I highlighted the disparity between the US’s GDP and its global market capitalisation, attributing it to sentiment around big-cap stocks like the “Magnificent Seven.” I also addressed China’s deflation and its impact on commodities like iron ore. Additionally, I pointed out opportunities in the small-cap space, particularly as Australia faces potential interest rate cuts this year. Ausbiz – outlook for 2025
David Buckland
January 9, 2025
I appeared on Ausbiz to review 2024 and talk about the outlook for 2025. Will the Magnificent Seven tech stocks continue their upward climb in 2025? Rising U.S. bond yields could potentially impact some of the share price returns of tech stocks in the U.S. market. I also discussed the potential in Australian small caps due to their underperformance relative to large caps.

Ausbiz – The “Euphoriameter”
Roger Montgomery
December 13, 2024
Yesterday, I appeared on ausbiz to share my thoughts on the current bull market, including the potential for a correction in January or a broader pullback next year. We discussed how disinflation and economic growth have historically supported innovative companies with pricing power. I also touched on sentiment indicators like the “euphoriameter”, highlighting that while these can signal extremes, the S&P 500 has historically continued to rally after past peaks. continue…

Ausbiz – AI’s winners and losers
Roger Montgomery
October 31, 2024
In this morning’s Ausbiz episode, I discussed how generative artificial intelligence (AI) might ultimately benefit consumers more than shareholders. We explored the distinct roles within the AI landscape: “upstream” companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) provide essential infrastructure, while “downstream” firms like Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) apply the technology but face slowing profit growth. Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), interestingly, occupies a “midstream” position, balancing both infrastructure and application. continue…

Ausbiz – How to tap into one of the fastest growing asset classes
Roger Montgomery
October 18, 2024
In yesterday’s interview with Ausbiz, we discussed the rising importance of private credit as a key asset class, with projections indicating it could double by 2028 to nearly $2.8 trillion. I explained that traditional 60/40 portfolios are becoming less effective due to the increased correlation between bonds and equities. By reallocating part of the fixed income exposure to private credit, investors can achieve higher returns and fewer losing years. A portfolio mix of 40 per cent equities, 30 per cent fixed income, and 30 per cent private credit not only enhances performance but also reduces volatility, providing greater portfolio stability without compromising equity exposure. continue…

Ausbiz – New CEOs but same old mistakes…
Roger Montgomery
October 8, 2024
In last week’s interview with Ausbiz, we discussed the recent accusations against Coles (ASX:COL) and Woolworths (ASX:WOW) for misleading shoppers about discounts. We explored how the new leadership at both companies, with female CEO’s, might bring a more nuanced and sensitive approach to crisis management. While Coles has taken a defensive stance, Woolworths’ more measured response could ultimately benefit their long-term brand value. Drawing from past examples like Qantas (ASX:QAN) and Exxon, I highlighted the importance of transparency and suggested that the supermarket that embraces change could gain a competitive edge in the market.

ABC News – What Coles and Woolies can do to rescue their reputations after fake discount claims
Roger Montgomery
October 1, 2024
Last week, I appeared on ABC News to discuss what Coles (ASX:COL) and Woolworths (ASX:WOW) can do to rebuild their reputations after accusations of fake discount claims, which caused a drop in both share prices. Coles is set to defend itself to the Australian Compeititon & Consumer Commission (ACCC), but both companies must act quickly to regain public trust. One of them has the chance to rally community support by being the first to address the issues openly and make meaningful changes to their pricing strategies. continue…

Ausbiz – Retail stocks worth putting on your shopping list
Roger Montgomery
September 23, 2024
In my recent interview with Ausbiz, I discussed the complex landscape for Australian consumers and the retail sector. While higher income earners are driving spending, lower income groups are tightening their belts, focusing on essentials like utilities and mortgages. Data from UBS and Finder reveals consumer trends remain resilient despite economic uncertainty. Retailers like JB Hi-Fi (ASX:JBH) and Nick Scali (ASX:NCK) have shown strong performance by gaining market share, particularly through overseas expansion, whereas others, like Harvey Norman (ASX:HVN), have lagged. Looking ahead to Christmas and Black Friday sales, I expect steady spending from wealthier consumers, but a drop among lower-income households, highlighting the challenges ahead for the retail sector.

Ausbiz – Two retail stocks with “promising” growth
Roger Montgomery
August 27, 2024
In my recent interview with Ausbiz, I gave an overview of the current earnings season, shedding light on how the uncertain economic environment has influenced company performances. Despite the unclear macroeconomic picture, there has been a notable trend of companies exceeding earnings expectations. A key concern emerging from these financial results is the impact of a persistently high-interest rate environment on various sectors. Specific companies like ARB (ASX:ARB) and Nick Scali (ASX:NCK) show promise, demonstrating that businesses with strong overseas growth opportunities can still thrive even in challenging economic conditions.
