Will it float or sink?
Roger Montgomery
December 11, 2013
My kids all played this game at the Montgomery residence when they were very young. We’d line up all manner of items next to a bowl of water and the kids had to think about whether the item would float or sink. Heavy pieces of wood were always fun because despite their weight, they floated.
That surprised look must also be on the faces of those who purchased shares in some of the recent wave of floats. Continue…

Business model fit for a king
Roger Montgomery
November 25, 2013
From time to time, a national dialogue is raised about Australia’s position in the Commonwealth. For a period, the public questions the role of the British monarchy in Australia, before ultimately deciding that if the system isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Continue…

Your Own Worst Enemy?
Roger Montgomery
November 4, 2013
To be successful as investors over the long haul, we mortals must overcome some big obstacles. Some of these are obvious – the volume of news and information published daily on companies and the stock market presents a daunting challenge for anyone without the luxury of being able to study it full time, and the complexity of modern finance theory seems designed to confound anyone with less than PhD level qualifications. Continue…

Freelancing success?
Ben MacNevin
October 31, 2013
Freelancer.com is the world’s largest freelancing, outsourcing and crowdsourcing marketplace. The company boasts an impressive 10 million users and 5 million projects. We wonder whether Freelancer.com has a network economy similar to other successful online marketplaces, such as Seek (ASX:SEK), REA Group (ASX:REA) and CarSales.com (ASX:CRZ)? Continue…

A mini bubble warning?
Russell Muldoon
October 30, 2013
Between 1995 and 2000, the mere mention of the word ‘internet’ in your business plan, IPO or marketing material was enough to set your stock on fire. Over that five-year period, the Nasdaq climbed from under 1,000 to 5,000 despite few businesses in the index actually making any money. Continue…

Monadelphous: leader of the pack?
Roger Montgomery
October 28, 2013
Sometimes it’s easy to identify the source of competitive advantage that drives the performance of a great business. For example, it may be intellectual property supported by large R&D investments in the case of companies like Resmed or Cochlear; it may be network effects and a dominant market position in the case of businesses like REA Group or Carsales; or it may be ownership of long life, very low cost resources for a mining company. Continue…

The subject of telecommunications advances and the companies that make up the telco sector are regular topics of discussion at Montgomery Investment Management.
The group’s stalwart is of course Telstra, but despite its popular acceptance as a ‘blue chip’ company, we have tended to avoid investment and preferred, and still own, a number of the second tier competitors. Continue…

Floating the OzForex boat
Roger Montgomery
October 5, 2013
RogerMontgomery.com subscribers can read our in-depth analysis of OzForex in this month’s exclusive white paper later this week.
Despite the buoyancy in the stock market over the past 12 months, we have been surprised to see so few new businesses apply for listing on the Australian Securities Exchange.
Rising markets, maturing term deposits and low cash rates are a good recipe for companies with IPO plans. Investors, who are likely to be more open about putting their hard-earned savings to work rather than reinvesting them in low yielding term deposits, may be keen to take on a little more by investing in companies that are angling to take the IPO plunge. Continue…
