How and when to buy real estate
Roger Montgomery
February 24, 2016
Will Rogers infamously suggested real estate was the best investment in the world because no more was being made. He obviously wasn’t considering how many apartments could be constructed on a postage stamp of land nor do I expect he had Singapore in mind; In the two photos following you can see that Raffles Hotel on Beach Road in Singapore is one block back from the beach. Between it and the coast sits the Britannia Club building. In the second image Raffles is partly obscured by the roof of a high rise building in the foreground but the Britannia Club now has a green painted roof in the section of land marked for sale. Down the road
Roger Montgomery
February 20, 2016
Volatility is a source of both risk and opportunity. Volatility is typically heightened at, or coincides with, turning points. Even substantial losses can accrue for investors who are ultimately proven right but are simply early. Last week the Japanese stock market index, the Nikkei, fell 11 per cent. Then on Monday of this week it rallied over seven per cent. That’s volatility. Continue…

A Value Investing Great
Roger Montgomery
February 19, 2016
Many years ago I would attend the Annual General Meetings of US company Wesco, in Pasadena California. Its Chairman was one Charles T Munger, now 91 years of age, and who, in my opinion was the brains behind Berkshire’s success – Warren Buffett while no slouch in the IQ stakes also provided the temperament essential to being able to pull the trigger on very large bets. Continue…

Stocks we like – Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
Ben MacNevin
February 3, 2016
As the global commodity rout continues, investors are searching for sectors that can provide safe haven for their capital. Many are seeking exposure to the anticipated growth benefits of an ageing population, which has caused some healthcare stocks to trade at levels that are difficult to justify. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (ASX: FPH) is one such company, whose NZ$8.50 share price is factoring in considerable earnings growth, but such is its prospects we feel the company may present reasonable value. Continue…

Are you considering the downside risk?
Scott Shuttleworth
January 28, 2016
It’s common knowledge that for a well-diversified portfolio of “blue-chip” shares, expected returns are generally in the order of market returns less transaction costs. What might be surprising to some is how quickly said portfolio can drastically underperform if diversification is removed from the equation. Continue…

A mug’s game
Roger Montgomery
December 18, 2015
It wasn’t that long ago, with the ASX200 stock market index at about 5700 points, that some magniloquent commentators were suggesting the ASX 200 index would be above 6000 points by the end of the year. Well here we are, on the cusp of 2016, and the index is below 5000. Continue…

Any value out there at the moment?
Roger Montgomery
December 8, 2015
It seems to many that the year about to conclude has been a tough one for investors. On a macroeconomic level the US Federal Reserve’s warnings of rate rises, followed by inaction, made uncertainty a given, while China’s deepening slowdown combined with a local chase for yield, set many investors up for a painful reckoning. Continue…

Chasing dividends often overlooks growth
Roger Montgomery
December 7, 2015
We have previously written about the bubble in stocks (and inevitably property) inflated by the baby boomer’s desperate search for yield. We described the pursuit of yield as a fad. So, while we were not surprised to watch investors rushing into higher yielding banks and Telstra, we were shocked to hear of investors buying BHP for its ‘progressive’ dividend. Continue…
