  • More pain to come as the RBA lifts rates again

    Roger Montgomery
    August 4, 2022

Back in May, Montgomery CEO, David Buckland, said he saw New Zealand as Australia’s ‘canary in the coal mine’. As the Kiwis had raised rates earlier and more frequently than our Reserve Bank, their experience would be a good pointer to what we could expect. If he’s right, we now have the answer: big declines in consumer and business confidence, and falling property prices. Continue…

  • Growth stocks could rebound if inflation turns out to be “transitory” after all

    Roger Montgomery
    August 3, 2022

Since bravely declaring that inflation would be “transitory” the Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, has been ridiculed for being so wrong.  After all, we’ve since seen inflation exceed initial estimates and be more persistent than anticipated. But now it seems inflation could be transitory after all. And that augers well for quality growth stocks. Continue…

  • Framework for investing is working already

    Roger Montgomery
    August 2, 2022

We have been prompting investors over the last month or two to consider a framework for investing amid macro-economic, geopolitical and central bank chaos. Trying to pick how markets will respond to a barrage of sometimes conflicting influences is near impossible. The picture is so complex and dynamic, picking whether the market will fall or rise is at best just a guess. Continue…

  • Reporting calendar – August 2022

    Roger Montgomery
    July 29, 2022

The team at Montgomery have a busy month ahead with the August reporting season upon us. Over the coming weeks companies will provide a flood of new information for the market to pore over.

For our readers and investors keen to know who’s reporting when, we have provided a link to a reporting calendar below. As a recession in many developed economies slowly becomes the consensus view, I would expect many analysts to belatedly downgrade their earnings forecast for Fiscal 2023. While a lot of this information has been anticipated by the share market, the companies’ results will make for interesting reading.

  • Why mortgage stress could be worse than the RBA thinks

    Roger Montgomery
    July 28, 2022

The Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), Michele Bullock, last week offered a cheerful, if not upbeat, interpretation of the circumstances faced by Australian mortgage holders, who are facing the brunt of the RBA’s interest rate rises. For Bullock, and presumably for the RBA, there’s no need to stress. I hope she’s right, but I fear things could get very difficult for a lot of borrowers. Continue…

  • Is Flight Centre part of the recovery theme?

    Roger Montgomery
    July 27, 2022

In this week’s video insight Roger discusses Flight Centre (ASX:FLT). This week Flight Centre saw its stock jump more than five per cent on the day it declared travel is recovering slightly faster than expected, and consequently, its losses should be smaller. Is the share price prematurely pricing in a recovery? Continue…

    Brett Craig
    July 25, 2022

With another jump in inflation expected to be reported this week, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is justifying their rapid rate rise trajectory. But how will businesses and households respond? Continue…
