Roger Montgomery
September 4, 2025
I joined Juliette Saly from Ausbiz to discuss America’s growing debt crisis and the looming risk of stagflation – the mix of slowing growth and stubborn inflation. We explored why rising borrowing costs, political pressure on the Federal Reserve, and stretched equity valuations are fuelling concerns, and what this means for investors navigating fragile markets. We also looked at the drivers behind the recent gold price surge.

Do new highs make sense?
Roger Montgomery
September 4, 2025
There is considerable academic and market commentary showing that equity markets often take time – sometimes weeks or months – to digest new information fully.
While Eugene Fama’s efficient market hypothesis posits that prices reflect available information almost instantly, we know that information is not evenly distributed. For example, studies on “post-earnings announcement drift” demonstrate that after companies release quarterly results, share prices tend to drift in the direction of the earnings surprise for an extended period. This implies investors initially underreact. Continue…

Insights from reporting season
Roger Montgomery
September 4, 2025
As August 2025 has now wrapped up, Australia’s reporting season has again delivered a snapshot of the economy’s trajectory. For years, we’ve heard the refrain of a “resilient” domestic market weathering global headwinds, interest rate hikes, and inflationary pressures. But this time around, the narrative has evolved. Companies across the ASX are signalling that resilience is giving way to tentative recovery, particularly in consumer spending and the housing sectors. Continue…

Roger Montgomery
September 4, 2025
In my article for Firstlinks, I explore whether a new brand of capitalism is emerging – one where governments take equity stakes in key industries to fund public services. Drawing on recent moves by the U.S. under Trump, I ask if Australia should consider a similar model to turn our resource wealth into broader social good, rather than relying solely on higher taxes or immigration.

Australia’s migration system: broken, according to Labor’s own minister
Roger Montgomery
September 3, 2025
Over the weekend, many Australians took to the streets to raise awareness about the adverse consequences and costs of Australia’s current migration policy. Those marches were peaceful, except, of course, in Victoria (where the government has legislated, or seeks to legislate, working from home and stealing from Woolworths, Bunnings, and Coles). Unfortunately, a radical element has grabbed the headlines, but setting those headlines aside, it is worth noting that the current architects of Australia’s migration policy have MPs who agree the system is broken and failing to deliver for Australia. Continue…

When it comes to investing, I’ve always believed the most important thing is managing risk. Over the years I’ve learnt a lot about how to build wealth steadily, and those lessons are just as relevant for people in their 30s as they are for those approaching retirement. In this bonus episode of The Money Puzzle, I sit down with The Australian’s Wealth Editor, Julie-anne Sprague, to share how I developed my approach to investing and what it can mean for your financial journey.
