Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL): The battering continues
David Buckland
July 13, 2022
The tough conditions I wrote about several months ago affecting the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) Sector appear to have gotten a lot worse, and the share prices or valuation of the following five companies have taken a battering, with an average decline approaching 90 per cent from the peak. Continue…

Dominic Rose
July 12, 2022
The Montgomery Small Companies Fund performance was a story of two halves during the financial year ending 30 June 2022, with strong returns posted in the first six months, followed by negative returns in the ensuing months. David Buckland
July 11, 2022
Continuing with the thematic of Earnings Per Share (EPS) growth combined with severe P/E compression, delivering the worst June half-year returns for many U.S. Indexes over several decades, I thought it’s appropriate to do a deep dive into the Polen Capital Global Small and Mid Cap Fund. Continue…

Is it time to hit the ‘buy’ button?
Roger Montgomery
July 8, 2022
If there’s one investing axiom to hang your hat on, it’s this: the lower the price you pay, the better your returns over the longer term. With the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios of many high quality businesses compressing, I therefore think it’s time for long-term investors to buy while so many others are fearful. Continue…

Roger Montgomery
July 7, 2022
The Montgomery Fund performance was a story of two halves during the financial year ending 30 June 2022, with solid returns posted in the first six months, outperforming the market as measured by the S&P / ASX 300 Accumulation Index. However, with several macro challenges facing investment markets, we have delivered a negative return in the ensuing six months despite a broadly defensive portfolio. Continue…

Share markets anticipate economic slowdown with enormous P/E compression
David Buckland
July 7, 2022
With the 20.6 per cent decline in the US S&P 500 over the six months to June 2022, the largest June-half year decline since 1970, it is interesting to note this was a period of solid earnings growth being hit by enormous P/E compression. This counterbalance of rising earnings combined with a P/E de-rating often occurs at index peaks, where markets anticipate slowdowns – often by around six months. Continue…

What to make of the May retail sales figures
Stuart Jackson
July 6, 2022
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has just released retail sales figures for the month of May. Contrary to market expectations, sales remained strong. But is this as good as it gets before rising living expenses eat into discretionary spending? Or will the build-up in pandemic-related household savings, and our strong labour market, continue to drive growth in consumer spending? Continue…
