  • Roger Montgomery’s Christmas Message 2020

    Roger Montgomery
    December 18, 2020

This Christmas I’d like to reflect on Community and Individualism. This year, I believe we have seen demonstrated, comprehensively, the failure of a society to deal with a crisis because the rights of the individual usurp the needs of the community.  We want to be known for our individual accomplishments, for our abilities and at the extreme end of individualistic fame as highlighted by so much of social media – we simply want to be known for being known. Instead, we should be known for caring for others, for helping and for rescuing those in need.  For putting others first and above ourselves.

  • Another stellar performance from Codan

    Andreas Lundberg
    December 17, 2020

Codan is a rare company with a clear market leading position in its niche and is producing very attractive returns and growth rates with sales growth of 28 per cent and profit growth of 40 per cent in FY20. In an update to market, Codan advised demand has been strong for its metal detectors, in both recreational and mining markets. Continue…

  • Don’t poke the China bear

    David Buckland
    December 16, 2020

The Reserve Bank of Australia is taking us down the Japanese and European path, obsessed with record low interest rates whilst spending little time on productivity growth. Following “emergency low interest rates” of 3.0 per cent during the Global Financial Crisis, the current 0.1 per cent cash rate is causing havoc amongst the retired generation, which number 4 million people or 15 per cent of our population. This generation unfortunately face Hobsons choice of going up the risk curve, often speculating on risk assets, or eating into their capital. Continue…

  • Why I think share markets will boom in 2021

    Roger Montgomery
    December 15, 2020

As 2020 draws to a close, the finance world is awash with market commentators making bold predictions for the year ahead. For what it’s worth, here’s mine: I think 2021 could see a surge in asset prices driven by the rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine, loose money supply and pent-up consumer demand. Continue…

  • A review of markets in 2020

    Joseph Kim
    December 15, 2020

With 2020 almost now behind us, I thought it was worthwhile looking at the year that was. It’s safe to say this year is unlikely to be forgotten for everyone, and not just those invested in equity markets. After a very strong January, investors and markets grappled with the uncertainty and severe volatility brought upon by COVID-19’s spread around the world. Continue…

  • Turn over these stones in 2021

    Roger Montgomery
    December 14, 2020

While 2020 will always be remembered for the global lockdowns associated with COVID-19, many will also remember it was the year the Reserve Bank of Australia’s monetary policy acquiesced to the big momentum of Modern Monetary Theory. It was the year the RBA embraced an assortment of avant-garde actions in a continuation of the measures adopted by its contemporaries, since the GFC, in most other jurisdictions. Continue…
