Where to invest if the economy heads for a hard landing
Roger Montgomery
May 20, 2022
Right now, there’s no shortage of pessimistic forecasts for the U.S. economy. You need only look at recent reports from the likes of Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. These bleak forecasts have many U.S. investors talking up the probability of a bear market in equities. In this environment, careful stock selection will be more important than ever. Continue…

Stuart Jackson
May 19, 2022
Conditions are about to get tougher for retailers as they face a perfect storm of falling incomes, galloping inflation, and rising interest rates. These impacts will crimp the discretionary spending power of many people. The one exception could be the under 25-year-old Gen Z demographic, who have fewer non-discretionary costs than other age groups. The retailers who sell to them could fare better than most. Continue…

Andreas Lundberg
May 18, 2022
It is closing in on the election date and we are seeing some stupid proposals coming as politicians are worried over getting re-elected/elected. The LNP’s proposal for first home buyers to access their superannuation balances for a deposit for their first home purchase is one I am highlighting. I consider this a thoroughly bad proposal from an overall society point of view for several reasons. Continue…

Ausbiz: Faith in central banks is waning
Roger Montgomery
May 17, 2022
In this interview for Ausbiz Roger discusses the Federal Reserve of the United States desire to shepherd the U.S. economy and the rest of the globe to a smooth landing as it moves quickly to a ‘neutral’ rate setting. Stagflation may be on the horizon, the term coined in the 1960s, refers to low economic growth combined with high unemployment and high prices. Many analysts predict inflation to rise before improving due to ongoing labour supply constraints, with 1.7 jobs available for every jobless worker. New Zealand; The canary in the coal mine
David Buckland
May 16, 2022
I have been impressed by the relative proactive leadership of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) in commencing their official cash rate tightening cycle well ahead of most other countries. Commencing on 6 October 2021 (as well as 24 November 2021, 23 February 2022, and 13 April 2022), the RBNZ have increased their cash rate from 0.25 per cent to 1.50 per cent on four separate occasions.
