Deflationary pressures in China – be careful what you wish for
David Buckland
February 7, 2024
Until recently, China’s decelerating inflation was welcomed by the West, as it led to lower imported prices and helped reduce inflationary pressures. However, China’s consumer prices fell for the third consecutive month in December 2023, delaying the expected rebound in economic activity following the lifting of COVID-19 controls. For calendar year 2023, CPI growth was negligible, whilst the producer price index declined by 3.0 per cent. continue…

How to maximise your returns in 2024 and beyond
Roger Montgomery
February 6, 2024
I recently wrote about my two big forecasts for 2024. One was that private credit would gain traction as an important asset class and would also feature more prominently in advised portfolios, especially for those seeking uncorrelated returns, lower volatility, and regular attractive income. I also stuck my neck on the block and suggested that if disinflation and positive economic growth dominate the economic backdrop, investors will adopt more risk and buy select small-cap stocks, closing the gap that emerged in 2023 between them and the mega-cap technology companies. continue…

January 19, 2024
As we kick off another year of investing, I thought I would offer a couple of predictions. They come thick and fast at this time of year, so rely on them as you might dental floss for security when rock climbing.

The RBA acknowledges boomers win and mortgagees lose
Roger Montgomery
November 29, 2023
Central banks across the globe find themselves in a challenging predicament, and our own Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) faces a particularly delicate situation. In Australia, an intricate interplay of demographics and home ownership dynamics creates a paradox where those who bear the brunt of rising interest rates are not the ones fuelling the inflationary fire through their spending habits. continue…

Why I believe REA Group is one of Australia’s highest quality businesses
Roger Montgomery
November 28, 2023
I believe REA Group (ASX:REA), is one of Australia’s highest-quality businesses. REA Group’s online portal – realestate.com.au – is the go-to destination for people wanting to buy, sell or rent property. Price rises in all property related areas have led to substantial revenue and earnings growth and have turbo-charged REA Group’s share price. continue…

Is forecasting a waste of time?
Roger Montgomery
November 24, 2023
I have had my fair share of bad calls. After more than three decades of investing, it’s safe for me to predict that there is next to no advantage in making predictions. What does make sense is to invest in great businesses and great managers and allow enough time to pass to allow the process of wealth creation within these businesses to occur. continue…

The RBA is in a bind along with mortgagees and renters
Roger Montgomery
November 20, 2023
Just 48 hours after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) lifted rates for the 13th time by 25 basis points to 4.35 per cent, the U.S. Federal Reserve’s Chair Jerome Powell said at a conference in Washington that “we are not confident” the Fed has tightened enough to bring inflation down to its 2 per cent goal. continue…

The market’s “weighty” overreaction
Roger Montgomery
November 8, 2023
Markets often resemble their participants, and the stock market is particularly vulnerable to the human psyche, prone to bouts of elation and despondency with each new trend. The recent euphoria surrounding a novel class of weight-loss and diabetes management drugs is a textbook example of this phenomenon. continue…

Why are property prices surging as rates are rising?
Roger Montgomery
November 8, 2023
In the thriving metropolises of Australia, the real estate horizon is gleaming brighter than ever. House prices have surpassed previous highs, putting a final nail in the coffin of those pessimistic forecasters who predicted 25-30 per cent declines. continue…
