Hang onto your hat, as the free money epoch comes to an end
Roger Montgomery
June 23, 2022
The last couple of years have been one helluva ride, haven’t they? Thanks to a heady cocktail of record low interest rates and massive government stimulus, we’ve seen ballooning valuations for companies with no profit – and little or no prospect of making any. But the free money epoch is now ending, and the dire consequences have only just begun for these companies and their shareholders. continue…

From Private Equity to Zombie – The ABC of capitalism
Roger Montgomery
June 2, 2022
We have long been critics of the profitless prosperity doctrine that pervaded financial markets while money was free. The doctrine permitted companies with no profit, and no prospect of making any, to invest private equity and family office money in the pursuit of gaining market share. Often this was achieved by crushing old-world incumbents into submission, if not oblivion. continue…

With oil & gas companies paying no tax, is it time to trigger the ADGSM?
Andreas Lundberg
May 26, 2022
For some years, there have been loud complaints that the Federal government has failed to deliver an effective energy policy that provides affordable, reliable and low-emissions electricity. This policy failure has resulted in soaring domestic energy prices. To make matters worse, oil and gas companies are paying close to zero tax. To my mind, it’s time for the new government to trigger the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism. continue…

The retailers that should weather the coming economic storm
Stuart Jackson
May 19, 2022
Conditions are about to get tougher for retailers as they face a perfect storm of falling incomes, galloping inflation, and rising interest rates. These impacts will crimp the discretionary spending power of many people. The one exception could be the under 25-year-old Gen Z demographic, who have fewer non-discretionary costs than other age groups. The retailers who sell to them could fare better than most. continue…

Why Coles should benefit as food inflation starts to bite
Stuart Jackson
May 4, 2022
Suddenly we’re all talking about inflation – particularly food inflation, which has been spurred on by the recent floods. This ‘new normal’ should play well for the value end of food retailing, where the likes of Coles, Woolworths and Aldi are likely to grow market share at the expense of pricier retailers like Metcash. Coles’ recent sales update gives a glimpse of what’s in store. continue…

Share Prices within The Buy Now Pay Later Sector continue to struggle
David Buckland
April 27, 2022
Two months ago, I wrote about the tough conditions gripping the Buy Now, Pay Later sector and asked whether the agreed takeover scrip bid by Zip Co Limited (ASX: ZIP) for Sezzle Inc (ASX: SZL) at 0.98 ZIP shares for 1.00 SZL shares was a marriage of convenience or a marriage of necessity. Since then, the share prices of both companies have more than halved from $2.21 to $1.02 for ZIP and from $1.78 to $0.84 for SZL. continue…
