Spark deals shows infrastructure is still in high demand
Andreas Lundberg
July 18, 2022
If you’re looking for a solid investment with stable and predictable cashflows, you could do worse than explore listed infrastructure assets. This conclusion was hammered home to me yet again by the news that Spark New Zealand (SPK:ASX) is selling 70 per cent of its passive tower infrastructure company for a pretty tidy sum. The deal follows other recent asset sales, and shows the continued appetite by investors for these assets. continue…

Dirty little thing called growth and why I think Symbio is good value
Gary Rollo
July 13, 2022
Like in most market downturns, small cap growth stocks are being punished hardest by a market that now views growth as a dirty word. This is great news for investors, as it creates opportunities to invest in businesses whose share price decline is due to changing sentiment rather than deteriorating fundamentals. In this climate, one company we think deserves investor attention is Symbio Holdings (ASX:SYM). continue…

David Buckland
July 13, 2022
The tough conditions I wrote about several months ago affecting the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) Sector appear to have gotten a lot worse, and the share prices or valuation of the following five companies have taken a battering, with an average decline approaching 90 per cent from the peak. continue…

Share markets anticipate economic slowdown with enormous P/E compression
David Buckland
July 7, 2022
With the 20.6 per cent decline in the US S&P 500 over the six months to June 2022, the largest June-half year decline since 1970, it is interesting to note this was a period of solid earnings growth being hit by enormous P/E compression. This counterbalance of rising earnings combined with a P/E de-rating often occurs at index peaks, where markets anticipate slowdowns – often by around six months. continue…

How KFC is making CKF a bear market winner
Roger Montgomery
June 30, 2022
Fast food businesses usually do well when times are tough, as many people – and families in particular – opt for less expensive places to eat out. It’s therefore no surprise that Collins Foods (ASX:CKF) – which operates KFC and Taco Bell in Australia and KFC in Europe – has outperformed the market. For the month ending 27 June, the Small Ordinaries Index fell eight per cent while CKF declined half that amount. continue…

Hang onto your hat, as the free money epoch comes to an end
Roger Montgomery
June 23, 2022
The last couple of years have been one helluva ride, haven’t they? Thanks to a heady cocktail of record low interest rates and massive government stimulus, we’ve seen ballooning valuations for companies with no profit – and little or no prospect of making any. But the free money epoch is now ending, and the dire consequences have only just begun for these companies and their shareholders. continue…

From Private Equity to Zombie – The ABC of capitalism
Roger Montgomery
June 2, 2022
We have long been critics of the profitless prosperity doctrine that pervaded financial markets while money was free. The doctrine permitted companies with no profit, and no prospect of making any, to invest private equity and family office money in the pursuit of gaining market share. Often this was achieved by crushing old-world incumbents into submission, if not oblivion. continue…

How Resmed is tackling supply chain issues
Joseph Kim
May 27, 2022
The share price of medical device company, ResMed (ASX:RMD), has struggled this calendar year due to supply chain issues and tumbling equity markets. While it can’t do anything about the markets, at the recent Macquarie conference its CFO, Brett Sandercock, explained how the company is making its supply chain more robust in order to capture longer-term market share. continue…

With oil & gas companies paying no tax, is it time to trigger the ADGSM?
Andreas Lundberg
May 26, 2022
For some years, there have been loud complaints that the Federal government has failed to deliver an effective energy policy that provides affordable, reliable and low-emissions electricity. This policy failure has resulted in soaring domestic energy prices. To make matters worse, oil and gas companies are paying close to zero tax. To my mind, it’s time for the new government to trigger the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism. continue…
