Dividends do not make a good company – Part 1
Roger Montgomery
November 6, 2023
I once relished receiving my dividend when they were sent as cheques in the mail. I liked tearing along that perforated line and took delight in those that were especially large in comparison to the price I had paid for the shares. I remember my shares in Fleetwood, whose dividend cheques were equal to 20 to 27 per cent of the investment I made. How silly of me then to ever hold a view about dividends that would cut out the fun of opening those innocuous, white, windowed envelopes that arrived the letter box twice a year. Continue…

Ausbiz – Does the recent rally have legs?
Roger Montgomery
November 3, 2023
In this week’s interview with Ausbiz, I wanted to discuss the potential for a continued equity rally. I cited a report from a Canaccord strategist who believes the environment does set the stage for a further rally. This is partly because, in the strategist’s view, the U.S. economy will slow down very rapidly. In fact, they put the probability of a recession at 99.9 per cent, and with stocks outside of the Magnificent Seven already lower – the U.S. Bank equity index has already been smashed by 50 per cent – it’s way too late to be negative now. So is the bad news already priced in? Watch the full interview here Ausbiz – Does the recent rally have legs?

The dawning of a new financial era: The silver lining in rising interest rates
Roger Montgomery
November 3, 2023
There is much debate about whether rates will rise or fall or stay about here for some time – the latter being my personal stance and prediction. Irrespective of our own beliefs, I think we can all agree interest rates aren’t going back to the lows we saw when the U.S. Federal Reserve cut rates to zero, and our own Australian banks benefitted from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) term funding facility, which provided three-year funding at 0.1 per cent. Demographic shifts over the balance of this decade
David Buckland
November 2, 2023
In this week’s video insight, I want to discuss two intriguing findings from Deutsche Bank’s report on global demographic shifts. Firstly, we’ll explore the substantial population growth in less developed regions and its potential implications. Secondly, we’ll delve into the aging population in developed markets, their dependence on government pensions, and the resulting consequences. Many commodities, both construction-related and agricultural, as well as healthcare should benefit from the aggressive shift in demographics. Continue…

The impact of ongoing inflationary pressure
Brett Craig
October 31, 2023
The quarterly consumer price index rose 1.2 per cent over the September quarter and 5.4 per cent over the last 12 months. The quarterly result is higher than the 0.8 per cent rise reported in June, however the annual consumer price index (CPI) headline figure has dropped from 6.0 per cent. The September results are still well above the 2 – 3 per cent target range. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has flagged that the return to target could be slower than their current forecasts. Additionally, they have clearly articulated that they will not hesitate to increase the interest rate further, should there be a material upwards revision to the outlook for inflation. Continue…
