For some time, we’ve been warning that rising interest rates would have catastrophic consequences for many profitless ‘prosperity companies’ (companies with no profit, and no prospect of making any). In particular, we’ve written that funding for these firms would dry up, leading to cuts in jobs and research and development (R&D), and that some firms would go under. Well, it’s all playing out as we predicted. And amid the carnage, one of the less publicised consequences is the impact on companies developing self-driving vehicles. Continue…

Significant contract win for Corporate Travel adds to strong momentum

This month Corporate Travel Management announced its largest ever contract win, worth around A$3 billion with the UK Home Office for Bridging accommodation and Travel Services. Under the contract, they will effectively be placing refugees and asylum seekers in accommodation. Barrenjoey issues its economic outlook – and it’s all a bit grim

Recently, our small-cap team listened to Barrenjoey Capital’s chief economist, Jo Masters, discuss the prospects for the Australian economy. In brief, Masters forecasts the economy to slow rapidly and unemployment to rise to five per cent, with a recession the most probable outcome.
