What happens when a population declines?

The world’s population is at an all-time record high of around 7.4 billion, and the United Nations estimates it will be over 11 billion in the year 2100. But populations aren’t growing everywhere. Detroit’s population is down 65% since peaking in 1950. And Japan’s is expected to drop 33% by 2060. The declines pose a new set of challenges for these communities. Continue…

Kyle Bass, the man who profited handsomely from predicting the subprime mortgage meltdown. Bass is convinced China will need to devalue the renminbi, which would be bad for equities. The Alpha Fund One Month In

The new Montgomery Alpha Fund has just completed its first month of live trading, returning a pleasing 3.24 per cent for August after all fees. Given our target for the Fund is to return 6-8 per cent above the cash rate annually, this is well ahead of what we might consider “normal”.
