How long will the recent outperformance of the banks last?
Stuart Jackson
January 21, 2021
In this week’s video insight Stuart discusses how the banks are positioned with a less economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic than first anticipated. Since the pre-COVID market high on 20 February 2020, the banks have generated a loss of 7 per cent compared to a loss of 3 per cent of the broader market over the same period, despite share prices outperforming in recent months. The Price to Earnings multiple of the banks have been falling for some time as a result of margin compression and higher capital requirements reducing their return generated on incremental equity invested. Will we see any special dividends from the banks as bad debt loan provisions are unwound?

The winners and losers of 2020
Scott Phillips
January 13, 2021
A lot will be written about events in calendar year 2020 and the impact COVID-19 had on many facets of our lives, not to mention the huge volatility in financial markets. David Buckland
January 12, 2021

Productivity reform is largely ignored, and together with ageing demographics and indebtedness, there is a handbrake to future economic growth. So, for 2021, what is in front of us?

Roger Montgomery
January 5, 2021
Roger Montgomery joined Gemma Dale on nabtrade’s Your Wealth podcast to discuss investing in 2021. After a year of massive volatility momentum stocks and namely those in technology, have dominated the pandemic’s bull market since the steep market correction in March. Why I think share markets will boom in 2021
Roger Montgomery
December 15, 2020
As 2020 draws to a close, the finance world is awash with market commentators making bold predictions for the year ahead. For what it’s worth, here’s mine: I think 2021 could see a surge in asset prices driven by the rollout of a COVID-19 vaccine, loose money supply and pent-up consumer demand. continue…

Turn over these stones in 2021
Roger Montgomery
December 14, 2020
While 2020 will always be remembered for the global lockdowns associated with COVID-19, many will also remember it was the year the Reserve Bank of Australia’s monetary policy acquiesced to the big momentum of Modern Monetary Theory. It was the year the RBA embraced an assortment of avant-garde actions in a continuation of the measures adopted by its contemporaries, since the GFC, in most other jurisdictions. continue…

How to position your portfolio for a post-COVID boom
Roger Montgomery
December 8, 2020
The good news on COVID-19 vaccines strengthens the case for a global equities boom in 2021. But where will the biggest gains be found? In beaten-down cyclicals, ‘re-openers’ and other firms smashed by the temporary lockdowns? Or in the so-called ‘pandemic darling’ tech stocks? continue…
