Three reasons for not letting foreign students fly in
Andreas Lundberg
August 31, 2020
I’m a former international student, so I definitely see the value of studying abroad. But recent lobbying by our cash-strapped universities to allow foreign students to fly in over the coming weeks is, to me, quite unacceptable. I just hope our politicians agree with me. Continue…

AGL faces the perfect storm
Andreas Lundberg
August 17, 2020
In what’s been a terrible year for the energy sector, AGL is the latest company to disappoint. Its full-year results included a steep drop in profits and signalled that there’s worse to come next year. While AGL intends to maintain its attractive flow of dividends, I’m not convinced this will be enough to tempt many investors given the negative outlook. Continue…

What does fewer migrants mean for property?
Andreas Lundberg
July 27, 2020
The latest economic update from the Federal Treasurer includes an assumption that net overseas migration will plummet as a result of COVID-19 related travel restrictions. Given that overseas migration is a major driver of property prices and construction activity, this will put a dampener on prices and have a major impact on employment. Continue…

What falling car sales tell us about the economy
Andreas Lundberg
July 8, 2020
New car sales data is a good indicator of consumer sentiment and of a country’s economic health. So the most recent data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries is a concern. They show that new car sales in Australia fell – for the 27th month in a row. Continue…

Codan goes from strength to strength
Andreas Lundberg
June 24, 2020
If you’re a regular reader, you probably know that one of my favourite Australian companies is Codan Limited (ASX: CDA), which makes communications, metal detection, and mining technology. Its share price has doubled in the past year, and its latest trading update gives me more reasons to be pleased we hold it in our funds. Continue…

Are debt deferrals a ticking time bomb for the economy?
Andreas Lundberg
June 16, 2020
Last week, the Australian Banking Association (ABA) updated the market on the number of mortgages and business loans deferred due to impacts from the COVID-19 crisis. In all, loans totalling $234 billion are not being repaid. The question is: what proportion of these borrowers will be able to resume repaying the banks once the other COVID-19 stimulus measures end? Continue…

Why the HomeBuilder program is terrible public policy
Andreas Lundberg
June 11, 2020
During the GFC, the Federal Government rolled out ‘Building the Education Revolution’ to stimulate the construction sector. The scheme had merit, as it helped to fund schools, which are long-term public assets. The same cannot be said of the recently announced, and seriously flawed, HomeBuilder program. Continue…

Are we about to see the end of the CBD?
Andreas Lundberg
June 1, 2020
I remember some years back hearing a ‘futurist’ predict that high-rise office buildings could end up being like the pyramids of Egypt – large relics for future generations to ponder. The COVID-19 work-from-home restrictions have made this prediction worth considering. Investors now need to ask: is there trouble ahead for real estate investment trusts (REITs) with big office portfolios? Continue…

Is the early release of superannuation a good idea?
Andreas Lundberg
May 20, 2020
One of the actions announced by the government to stimulate the economy as a response to the current crisis is that individuals can apply for an early release of superannuation savings. The rules are that an individual can apply to withdraw $10,000 before the 30 June and another $10,000 between the beginning of July and the end of September. Continue…

Andreas Lundberg
May 11, 2020
Right now, we’re seeing a tug-o-war between investors who think the worst is behind us and those who feel there is more coronavirus induced pain to come. A look at recent corporate earnings announcements gives a slightly clearer picture of the road ahead. Continue…
