  • Australian property update

    Roger Montgomery
    June 14, 2024

I recently wrote here about the economics of borrowing 100 per cent of the purchase price for a two-bedroom apartment, and the results weren’t compelling. Despite the annual losses incurred from carrying the property and the historical lack of sufficient capital gains to offset those losses enough to render the investment superior to an equivalent investment in private credit, most Australians will trip over themselves to own an investment property. Bragging rights at dinner parties and keeping up with the Joneses may have something to do with it. As they say, you can lead a horse to water… Continue…

ABC Nightlife – Navigating market trends and Gen Z’s influence

    Roger Montgomery
    June 13, 2024

In my latest ABC Nightlife interview, I had the pleasure of joining Dom Knight to delve into the current market landscape and address some of your pressing questions. We explored how Generation Z’s connection through social media have not only transformed their social interactions but also disrupted numerous industries. We examined demographic shifts and the significant financial influence Gen Z is having on companies’ share valuations, with recent examples such as Asics (TYO:7936) Onitsuka Tigers and Crocs (NASDAQ:CROX). Ausbiz – it’s a good time to invest in innovative small caps

    Roger Montgomery
    June 12, 2024

In my interview this morning with Ausbiz, I discussed the current market environment and my optimism for equities, amid disinflation and modest economic growth. While 2023 saw major gains concentrated in seven large innovators, smaller companies lagged. With interest rates stabilising, now is an opportune time for smaller, innovative companies, I expect this trend to continue until 2026. I emphasise focusing on quality investments, particularly in sectors like cloud technology, which show strong growth potential and pricing power. You can watch the full interview here: Roger says it’s a good time to invest in innovative small caps  Continue…

ABC Newcastle Mornings – Exploring CEO transitions in the corporate landscape

    Roger Montgomery
    June 12, 2024

In this week’s interview with Paul Turton on ABC Newcastle radio, we delve into the evolving role of CEOs in the corporate landscape, particularly in small caps. We also discuss the scenarios when CEO’s exit a company effective immediately following certain incidents and the impact these decisions have on the organisation.

  • The demographic boom investors must follow

    Roger Montgomery
    June 11, 2024

The combination of a growing cohort entering salaried employment for the first time, a very high proportion of that salary being disposable, and the first generation to be comfortably and familiarly globally connected through social media can have a stratospheric impact on the revenues of companies that drop a product that becomes a smash hit with Gen Z.  Continue…

    June 7, 2024

I have previously written here that one of the most repeatable ways to make money on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) is to buy into a retail store rollout story early. Catching the steepest part of the ‘S’ curve when revenue and profit growth are accelerating while head office becomes simultaneously more efficient usually produces good results thanks to the accompanying rise in the share price.  Continue…

  • Private credit transactions are everywhere

    David Buckland
    June 6, 2024

In this week’s video insight, I discuss the emerging prominence of private credit transactions in Australia. Following our partnership with Aura Credit Holdings two years ago, we’ve observed a growing interest in private credit as a reliable income source for investors, especially those with self-managed super funds. Recent investments by major international firms into this asset class further underscore its growing appeal.  Continue…

  • Discretionary spending is under pressure

    David Buckland
    June 5, 2024

The restaurant and cafe segment of the hospitality industry holds some sway with government, with its 110,000 venues generating $64 billion in annual revenue. Additionally, it is one of the country’s largest employers of young people. With tougher trading conditions, increasing rents and costs of inputs, the sector is facing unprecedented challenges.  Continue…
