Rally rally

Well, what a difference a few weeks can make in financial markets. It seems that based on the daily moves higher in all things commodities, the bears gave up en-masse on their shorts. Just overnight oil rose another 5.5 per cent and iron ore with 62 per cent content jumped up an incredible 19 percent. The biggest one-day gain since 2009 by some margin.
To put these moves into context however, a few comments from a recent Bloomberg article below are noteworthy;

Private equity floats disappoint on smaller scale

While the big story this reporting season is BHP’s progressive dividend backflip, the rest of corporate Australia, it seems, is doing OK. Some results have been sufficiently surprising that analysts following them have upgraded their outlooks including annuity income security seller Challenger. But the real story this reporting season has been the results of smaller companies recently listed by private equity players.

Declining profit estimates for the S&P 500

Profits for the S&P 500 companies, according to Thompson Reuters, declined by 3.5 per cent in the December 2015 Quarter relative to the December 2014 Quarter. The 30 per cent decline in the oil price over those two periods, from US$53/ bbl to US$37/bbl, lead to a 75 per cent collapse in energy companies’ profitability. continue…
