SMSF cost analysis
Scott Phillips
February 15, 2021
The success of the Australian superannuation system, envied by most governments around the world has now grown to encompass close on $3 trillion of assets. This is broadly split between three different types of fund – Public Sector/Industry/ Corporates, Retail and Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF). The proponents of each type often battle it out in the court of public debate as to the merits of each type and one of the fronts of attack is often on the topic of cost! continue…

Own the bank not a bank deposit
Roger Montgomery
February 12, 2021
After 37 years of declining interest rates that have fuelled asset price increases but laid waste to lower-risk income streams, it is perhaps surprising that now should be the time to be discussing dividends. But dividends are back in the spotlight, in no small part due to pronouncements by central bankers including the US Federal Reserve’s Jerome Powell and the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Phillip Lowe that low short-term rates are here to stay, perhaps for years. continue…

How long will the recent outperformance of the banks last?
Stuart Jackson
January 21, 2021
In this week’s video insight Stuart discusses how the banks are positioned with a less economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic than first anticipated. Since the pre-COVID market high on 20 February 2020, the banks have generated a loss of 7 per cent compared to a loss of 3 per cent of the broader market over the same period, despite share prices outperforming in recent months. The Price to Earnings multiple of the banks have been falling for some time as a result of margin compression and higher capital requirements reducing their return generated on incremental equity invested. Will we see any special dividends from the banks as bad debt loan provisions are unwound?

Stuart Jackson
November 3, 2020
Investors in Australia’s major banks have had a tough year. Bank profits – and their dividends – have been pummelled by fines emanating from the financial services royal commission and AUSTRAC investigations, as well as the COVID-19 recession. However, the recently announced full-year profit result from ANZ may put some fears to rest for now. continue…

What was the point of the Banking Royal Commission?
Andreas Lundberg
September 29, 2020
Just last week, the Federal Government decided to loosen lending requirements for Australian banks – a move that’s completely at odds with the recommendations of the Commissioner, Kenneth Haynes. Sure, investors seemed to like the decision, pushing bank stocks higher. But will this all end badly, once again? continue…

Why the big banks are underperforming the market
Stuart Jackson
April 23, 2020
If you’re holding shares in an Australian bank – particularly National Australia Bank (ASX:NAB), Westpac (ASX:WBC) or Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ASX:ANZ) – then you’re likely feeling less wealthy than you were back before Coronavirus was a household word. In just two months, the market has priced in the impact of loan losses by the banks and the potential need for dilutive equity raisings. And the worst may not be over. continue…

Stuart Jackson
April 9, 2020
Each day the coronavirus pandemic sets another domino to fall. The latest could be bank dividends. It’s now very likely that our banks will cut – or even postpone – their dividends this year. If they do, it will be a major blow to many retail investors and retirees. continue…
