Why our small caps team likes IPH
Roger Montgomery
August 18, 2022
IPH Limited (ASX:IPH) is the leading intellectual property services group in the Asia Pacific region and its shares had fallen as much as 15 per cent from their 2020 highs, for no apparent reason, at which point Gary and Dominic from the Montgomery Small Companies Fund added it to the portfolio on the back of its defensive growth characteristics, strong balance sheet and monumental cash generation. The shares have subsequently rallied from $7.16 to $8.80 prior to today’s results announcement. continue…

Gary Rollo
August 11, 2022
Gary Rollo joined Chris Judd’s Talk Ya Book to discuss one of his favourite value picks at the moment, telecom software business Symbio Holdings (ASX:SYM). Symbio is profitable, growing, generates cash flows and is also on 9 times EBITDA which for an industrial stock is cheaper than the market.

Reporting calendar – August 2022
Roger Montgomery
July 29, 2022
The team at Montgomery have a busy month ahead with the August reporting season upon us. Over the coming weeks companies will provide a flood of new information for the market to pore over.
For our readers and investors keen to know who’s reporting when, we have provided a link to a reporting calendar below. As a recession in many developed economies slowly becomes the consensus view, I would expect many analysts to belatedly downgrade their earnings forecast for Fiscal 2023. While a lot of this information has been anticipated by the share market, the companies’ results will make for interesting reading.

Is Flight Centre part of the recovery theme?
Roger Montgomery
July 27, 2022
In this week’s video insight Roger discusses Flight Centre (ASX:FLT). This week Flight Centre saw its stock jump more than five per cent on the day it declared travel is recovering slightly faster than expected, and consequently, its losses should be smaller. Is the share price prematurely pricing in a recovery? continue…

Spark deals shows infrastructure is still in high demand
Andreas Lundberg
July 18, 2022
If you’re looking for a solid investment with stable and predictable cashflows, you could do worse than explore listed infrastructure assets. This conclusion was hammered home to me yet again by the news that Spark New Zealand (SPK:ASX) is selling 70 per cent of its passive tower infrastructure company for a pretty tidy sum. The deal follows other recent asset sales, and shows the continued appetite by investors for these assets. continue…

Dirty little thing called growth and why I think Symbio is good value
Gary Rollo
July 13, 2022
Like in most market downturns, small cap growth stocks are being punished hardest by a market that now views growth as a dirty word. This is great news for investors, as it creates opportunities to invest in businesses whose share price decline is due to changing sentiment rather than deteriorating fundamentals. In this climate, one company we think deserves investor attention is Symbio Holdings (ASX:SYM). continue…

Share markets anticipate economic slowdown with enormous P/E compression
David Buckland
July 7, 2022
With the 20.6 per cent decline in the US S&P 500 over the six months to June 2022, the largest June-half year decline since 1970, it is interesting to note this was a period of solid earnings growth being hit by enormous P/E compression. This counterbalance of rising earnings combined with a P/E de-rating often occurs at index peaks, where markets anticipate slowdowns – often by around six months. continue…

How KFC is making CKF a bear market winner
Roger Montgomery
June 30, 2022
Fast food businesses usually do well when times are tough, as many people – and families in particular – opt for less expensive places to eat out. It’s therefore no surprise that Collins Foods (ASX:CKF) – which operates KFC and Taco Bell in Australia and KFC in Europe – has outperformed the market. For the month ending 27 June, the Small Ordinaries Index fell eight per cent while CKF declined half that amount. continue…
