Can TPG buy Vodafone?
Scott Shuttleworth
January 19, 2015
When you’re in the markets, you hear a lot of ‘talk’ and it’s an interesting exercise to work through the numbers of some of that ‘talk’ – particularly when you can show that the ‘talk’ is probably on the wrong track.
Recently we’ve been hearing rumours that TPG may make a bid for Vodafone’s Australian business. I took the time to run through the numbers and see whether it was a likely event. continue…

Should you ignore the hype?

December 19, 2014
TPG Telecom Limited (ASX: TPM) has been sold off sharply over the past few days presumably post the Government’s response to the Vertigan Panel’s review of the National Broadband Network & telecommunications industry which you can find here.
The report contains a lot of material, an analysis of which could extend for several pages, so below we attempt a more concise review of some of the changes and their potential implications for TPG as we currently see them. continue…

Battle of the mobiles – who is the winner?
Scott Shuttleworth
December 15, 2014
Commsday ran a test of the various major mobile networks to see which performed best in various environments on their shiny new 4G services. A full copy of the report can be found here.
Telstra took first place with solid results across the board. This wasn’t unexpected result, Telstra owns the most and highest quality mobile spectrum as well as the most expansive network of wireless infrastructure in the country.
Optus was second, whilst Vodafone was third having been weighed down by poor results when the mobiles were streaming from Youtube. continue…

December 3, 2014
DEC 3, 2014: According to Finsia “competition from new technology and growing customer demands have seen 12 financial services organisations team up to back a world-leading, real-time payments solution for Australia.
The New Payments Platform (NPP) marked a milestone on December 2, 2014 when the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) was unveiled as NPP Australia’s chosen platform builder and operator. continue…

Is the corporate opportunity for TPG overlooked?
Scott Shuttleworth
December 1, 2014
After a meteoric rise, it’s prudent to question whether there is value left in a share price, and it’s a question we have been pondering on TPG Telecom Limited (ASX: TPM) for quite some time. There is plenty of media on the consumer side of the business, particularly with regard to its positioning against the NBN, but in this post I’ll be discussing the corporate side, which is also deserving of attention. continue…

Is Vocus about to light up?
David Buckland
December 1, 2014
Russell and I attended the Vocus Communications Limited (ASX: VOC) Annual General Meeting last week. While the company could not give anything away on their proposed merger with Amcom Telecommunications Limited (ASX: AMM), we continue to be incredibly impressed with the calibre of the Vocus Board of Directors, especially in the context of its $600m market capitalisation.
In the four years to June 2014, the company’s revenue line has increased from $31m to $92m, while its EBITDA has climbed from $10m to $33m. And in the four years to November 2014, the Vocus Communications’ share price has responded in kind by quadrupling from $1.50 to the current $6.00. continue…

SEEK (ASX:SEK) is a top ten holding in both The Montgomery Fund and The Montgomery [Private] Fund so we are pleased to hear, through the company’s latest update, that the business is performing ‘strongly’.

Are we ready for Netflix and who might benefit?
Scott Shuttleworth
November 27, 2014
Just the other day we met with two executives from Village Roadshow Limited (ASX: VRL), Graham Burke, Managing Director and Adrian Fernando from investor relations, to discuss some of the trends in their business. It was quite an interesting meeting.
Although it was a bit of speed date – trying to fit in six company meetings in a day – we did spend a reasonable amount of time understanding not only their opportunities for development of theme/water parks in South East Asia, but also on the future of content delivery in Australia. continue…

Good news this week for two Montgomery holdings
Roger Montgomery
November 14, 2014
Firstly, Seek Limited (ASX:SEK) subsidiary Zhaopin Limited (NYSE:ZPIN) received a boost when it reported 3Q14 revenue growth of 32 per cent year-on-year (YOY); and EBITDA growth of 34 per cent YOY.
We will be investigating why the unaudited result was so strong given the company had been growing at around 11 per cent YOY; and Zhaopin’s key competitor, JOBS, reported 3Q14 revenue growth of just 13 per cent YOY. The result, which was reported under A-IFRS (Australian Accounting standards), will differ to the results prepared under GAAP for its US listing. continue…
