The Speed of Change

The Speed of Change

As you may have heard, the Supreme Court of the United States legalised gay marriage last week. Not a line you may expect to start a blog post on investing, but the ruling provides a fascinating insight into how quickly society is changing.

A recent Bloomberg article demonstrates how public opinion on major issues is changing at an increasingly faster rate. As opinion changes, so too does behaviour, which means the opportunities and challenges for investors are becoming even greater.Screen Shot 2015-07-03 at 9.13.46 amThe most recent financial year had many examples of rapid and sizeable change. People are becoming more health conscious and falling out of favour with Coca-Cola; watching videos on demand is becoming more appealing than television; health care is being administered in the home, and the thought of investing in overseas markets is becoming more appealing and accessible.

These really are incredible times.

Not sure, but some selective bias may have occurred here. Did we forget about recreational marijuana? 4 years, 4 states… on par with prohibition and interracial marriage.

Just because American states legislate at a certain pace does not mean the idea has been accepted by society at the same rate. False logic, sorry but Bloomberg failed on this one.
