Vodafone gets wired

Vodafone Australia and TPG Telecom Limited (ASX: TPM) yesterday announced a circa $1 billion deal for the rollout of 4,000 km’s of dark fibre around Australia.
The agreement will allow Vodafone to link up it’s circa 3,000 mobile towers across Australia. This will enable the carrier to advance later in the decade into offering 5G mobile broadband services, a requirement for future competition with Telstra Corporation Limited (ASX: TLS) & Singtel Optus Pty Limited (SI: Z74). continue…

It’s good to be small

In the next few weeks a small New Zealand based insurer – CBL Corp Limited – lists on ASX and NZX. CBL is a slightly odd beast in the insurance world: it focuses on small but profitable specialist niches, where it is able to earn significant underwriting profits. In contrast, mainstream insurers tend to write as much business as they can, even if it means taking on business that earns little to no underwriting profit. They do this because in the period between receiving an insurance premium and having to pay out claims, they can earn investment returns on the premiums written. continue…

China’s Industrial Profits declined by 8.8 per cent in August from a year earlier, with the biggest fall concentrated in coal, oil and metals according to the National Bureau of Statistics. For the eight months to August 2015, profits from coal, oil and metals companies declined by 65 per cent, 67 per cent and 52 per cent, respectively, on a year on year basis. continue…
