Know Your Limits
Tim Kelley
October 20, 2015
Here’s a striking chart. It tracks the share price of BHP Billiton (ASX: BHP) over the past five years, together with the average analyst forecast for BHP’s FY16 Earnings Per Share (EPS) during that period. Unsurprisingly, the two have moved together. Also, changes to analyst forecasts have tended to follow changes to the share price. You might think it should be the other way around, but that’s a discussion for another time. continue…

The importance of ROE (return on equity) and buying companies with bright prospects is sacrosanct here at the Insights Blog but why? ROE is an important explanatory variable for superior share price performance and so we want businesses that can sustain high rates of return. When I talk about bright prospects it is the sustainability of these high rates of return that I am referring to. Whether the bright prospects relate to a rising tide of customers, the ability to pass on rising costs, the ability to be the low cost provider or the changing competitive landscape, how these factors serve to produce a high rate of return on equity is what we care about.

Ben MacNevin
October 15, 2015
The fight for market share can be a long and bloody battle. The lucrative reward of market dominance, combined with the threat of obsolescence, spurns companies to engage in years, and even decades, of intense rivalry. Roger Montgomery
October 14, 2015
Whether you call it disruption, transformation or creative destruction, they are simply new age terms for change. Tim Kelley
October 13, 2015
There are many aspects of personal finance and investment that apply to all of us. For example, with a bit of application we can all find a sensible trade-off between spending today versus saving for the future; we can all determine an asset mix with a reasonable balance of risk and return; and we can all go about our investing in a tax-effective way to maximise the long-term benefits. continue…
