Making Sense of ResMed’s New Platform

Making Sense of ResMed’s New Platform

ResMed Inc (ASX: RMD) has launched its new flow generator platform, the AirSense 10, and first impressions are positive.

Informatics, or the collection of useful data, is the next step in the value chain for manufacturers of sleep apnoea devices. Funding by Government agencies and private insurers is becoming increasingly dependent upon patient compliance, so in order to remain competitive, the manufacturers must provide as much information as they can to suppliers and users.

The AirSense 10 platform is being marketed as an end-to-end solution, which will not only help suppliers effectively maintain their patient relationships, but also provide greater control for patients to manage their own therapy. For instance, the machine can diagnose mask failures and alert the user to order a new one.

ResMed is hoping that the platform will provide such a compelling package that it will be an easy decision for doctors to prescribe to patients. ResMed also considers that the “informatics” features of the AirSense 10 will prove more economical for suppliers than their lower-priced competitors.

The AirSense 10 series devices are now available in the United States and Australia, and we will be researching the market extensively to determine the potential success of the launch. There is no better research than using the product, and we welcome any feedback from our readers who may have exposure to the device.

  1. About eight years ago I became a Resmed customer when at that time I became the owner of a top of the line model.

Two months ago I returned to the same retailer (in Sydney) for a new upgraded Resmed machine. To my surprise the retailer was more interested in steering me to a Philips which in his opinion was a better machine. (He himself had previously been a Resmed user but gone to a Philips). While he agreed that Resmed had a good product and would happily sell me a Resmed if that was what I wanted, his personal experience was that their service to the retailer was poor. Further (in his opinion) the Philips gave up better information from its computerised nightly reports.

I have been trialling the Philips for the last six weeks and next week I am likely to become a Philips customer. After eight years of Resmed experience I certainly do not have any negative feelings towards Resmed but then after six weeks with Philips neither do I have negative feelings towards a Philips. From my perspective they both do the same thing! The opinion and experience of the retailer will probably win the day.

Perhaps the Resmed share price that has been trading approximately side-ways for the last 18 months is showing the same disinterest as the Resmed service department does to the retailer! Last week I did lighten up on RMD mainly because basically the share price has been going no place during that same period.

  2. Its also fast becoming the forefront of OH&S compliance…that any one driving heavy machinery or passenger transport will be forced to have testing done…which will drive new diagnosis as well. Its over kill but Resmed may benefit

  3. My Dad has been diagnosed, and will hopefully end up with one of these machines. Compliance with treatment remains one of the biggest hurdles to effective medical assistance, and any device on the market that assists with compliance should do well.
The other reason I am fond of Resmed at the moment is the amount of undiagnosed people out there that are being targeted at the moment, with sleep issues getting pushed to the forefront as a major quality of life issue.
